Honolulu is a big city with big city things to do. You aren't going to run out of activities in a hurry. Oahu is a pretty heavily populated island - lots to do but lots of people. But it depends on what you're looking for in a Hawaiian experience. All amenities of a large city with the benefit of being on a tropical Island. Honolulu offers you everything you want and need but also gives you the opportunity to find quiet places. The beaches here are very crowded. If you have a car, driving 6 to 10 miles east give you beautiful beaches and not crowded. The bus can also take you there. Great busses. Inexpensive w friendly drivers. The can take you all around the island. Note where you want to go and then drive there. Honolulu is great for first time visit. It was a good base as we divided our time between car rentals to explore to quieter days walking and beach. It's a very accommodating city for all. We ate at places like Norths Shore food trucks, Monkey Pod and Steak Shack and Maui Brewery. The main street of Waikiki is about 1 minute, Waikiki Beach is about a 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast is simple (continental), but sufficient. We were given a room with a higher level of comfort without extra charge. Towels for the beach are available for free. There is a dedicated smoking area in the little garden of the hotel.
