FAQs about hotels in Sacramento

Still Glimmering Like Gold

Sacramento maintains a glimmer of the Gold Rush and, if there weren’t cars on the cobbled streets, when wandering Old Sacramento you almost feel like you’re back in those days. Like in classic Westerns, horses pull covered wagons past a wooden boardwalk linking covered shopfronts.

The blossoming Californian capital attracted more than one kind of pioneer though. The Big Four entrepeneurs devised the Central Pacific Railroad, as detailed in the State Railroad Museum. The Eagle Theatre was the state’s first, on a considerably smaller scale than the modern-day arts venues showcasing everything from opera to ballet.

A paddle steamer is moored on the nearby Sacramento River, and the American River Parkway lines the city’s other river, opposite the first settlement site. The founder created Sutter’s Fort, and the State Indian Museum documents the native people that lived there long before.

Despite such mass immigration, Sacramento is surprisingly well integrated, but with that glorious Californian sun, it’s easy to see why the locals are so laidback. Palm trees shade streets including Capitol Mall, connecting the State Capitol to Tower Bridge. The nearby Crocker Art Museum is the oldest museum in the western US, while historic figures are remembered in the California Hall of Fame.

Booking.com’s accommodation options include apartments near the convention centre, cheap motels and Sacramento Airport hotels.

for being a larger city it was very clean, I felt safe the whole time with lots of police and security patrolling. We explored midtown, downtown and old town and never ran out of things to do or see. It was big city vibes without being as spread out as Los Angeles. We ate at great restaurants like The Porch and had great entertainment at the Guild theater in oak park. We also enjoyed a very affordable horse and buggy ride through old town.

Downtown Sacramento was clean and easy to walk around. Il Fornaio, Old Town Sacramento and Crockre Art Museum were all close to the hotel as was Crocker Art Museum. I would have spent more time there.

Do not bring children here.

Do not bring children here. The doors do not lock and ACs don’t work. Will charge you for “damaged linens” when they leave the carpets greasy and wet. Avoid the rat bait trap they use in the breakfast food.

Booking motels and hotels are tough in Sacramento because it's a convention town. Always some excuse to charge more for 1 and 2 star facilities. Be careful of Booking sites, a lot of bait and switch. Only way to be safe and get a decent room is to pay 200 or more for higher end properties. Sacramento is for rich Magas.

Traffic was worse than I expected.

Traffic was worse than I expected. I live in the San Francisco bay area just off the busiest daily commute freeway so traffic is an everyday experience, but except for winter skiing coming home on Sunday night traffic I didn't expect so many cars on the road through Sacramento. Otherwise, I enjoyed the time there. Dinner was good, even better than good, I enjoyed time spent at an expo at the state exposition center. Overall, a good time was had by all.

Everything was great with the exception of: The breakfast hot food... Eggs and sausage were rubber inedible. The parking, being charged eleven dollars and fifty cents a day, and I was not made aware of that until I got my bill. Also, on the back of the card to get in parkingarea, it says that the hotel is not responsible if the car's broken into or damaged... but yet you are paying a fee to the hotel for what?

The Kimpton Sawyer is located in the downtown area and is within easy walking distance of the historic area and the main museums (although the Automobile Museum is a long walk away). The hotel has large clean rooms, good facilities (including a decent restaurant within the building, albeit under different ownership) and helpful staff.
