Centuries of History, Days of Sunshine

The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.

Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.

Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.

On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.

We could go on and on about magnificent Crete beaches, but whichever resort you choose, you can be almost guaranteed fantastic food and a good helping of sunshine.

Very beautiful and modern hotel. Everything looks and feels new. The rooms are super neat and spacious. There is airconditioning and even a refrigerator. The breakfast was very tasty and the food choice is ample, they even interchange daily so you won’t get bored with the food. They also have their own swimming pool and are located directly next to the beach where they also have a beach bar with sunbeds. Would definitely recommend and come here again.

Lato Boutique Hotel is a great place to stay in Heraklion. The view of the harbor is magnificent. The room is spacious, and the bed is very comfortable. Breakfast is varied and offers many homemade Greek products. The reception staff are extremely friendly and always ready to give useful tips. This was our second stay at Kalypso and we find everything great value for money. As we're do not spend alot of time at the resort other than sleeping and breakfast it is perfect for needs. It was about a ten minutes walk uphill part way to Koutouloufari, loads of restaurants and bars, a fabulous experience. Walk a little further and you come to Piscopiano, also excellent. Walk down the hill and you come to restaurants with Greek dancing and plate smashing, also excellent.

The harbour is obviously a main attraction, although it is a pity that there are so many derelict buildings that you see when walking along the sea front. At night the old town centre with the restaurants and bars is crowded and buzzing. The biggest attraction just out of town (3€ each way on the bus) he’s to be Knossos Palace, but personally I was disappointed because so much of what you are told is assumed to be what it was once like. However, I did go round without guide of shy sort. Also the archaeological museum contains impressive amounts of artifacts , many of which came from the Palace.

Rethymno is a very beautiful city. I liked it more than Chania, where we were before. We could walk for hours along its charming streets. Overall, I fell in love with Crete, where I am coming for the first time. There are many beautiful beaches and many sights.

Beautiful, relaxing resort with many excellent restaurants. Easy to travel by bus to lovely places like Elounda. The boat trip to Spinalonga is very worthwhile. A visit to the archaeological museum is recommended.

Gramvousa Restaurant is a must, a short drive to a memorable dining experience. Loved snorkeling and fish sightings around rocky areas. Pictures cannot capture the panoramic breath-taking setting.

I love Agia Marina—it has beautiful beaches, great...

I love Agia Marina—it has beautiful beaches, great restaurants, plenty of shops, and stunning views. You can easily walk to Platanias or Stalos. It’s also easy to reach Falasarna Beach and further on to Elafonissi Beach and the Samaria Gorge. Agia Marina also has excellent tourist infrastructure—you’ll easily find car rentals, bus stops with frequent connections to Chania, as well as many beachfront bars and cafés. It’s a great place both for a quiet and relaxing holiday and for a more active stay (water sports, excursions). Another highlight is the island of Agioi Theodoroi visible from the shore, which adds to the charm of the landscape.

We only popped in a few times walking from our resort, which was a great way to start the morning, and have a coffee before returning, easy entrance to water and looks like could be busy in the evening.

There are plenty of shops along the main road, (the usual you expect to see on holiday), but it's not what you would call a 'resort town'. It is more a suburb of Heraklion which is mostly residential.
