The location is amazing, everything is close by, cafes, shops, restaurants. Very quite and beautiful, the area is so alive. The parking is on the opposite side if the entrance, across a pizza restaurant, not very clear at first we had to ask the reception desk. Great lounge area, they have a restaurant and a very modern dining area but I didn’t try them. Looking pretty good though.

I visited Ghent from 7–9 September and asked ChatGPT to recommend a hotel that would: (a) be right in the city centre and easy to navigate from to visit all the main sights; (b) be reputed for its hospitality, comfort, and service; and (c) help create a truly beautiful memory of my stay. It recommended 1898 The Post—and the choice couldn’t have been better. The hotel is housed in a grand historic building, formerly the Post Office, right in the heart of the city. The Lys River and the Graslei and Korenlei quays (lined with eateries) are directly behind the hotel. In front are the St Nicholas Church, St Bavo’s Cathedral, the Town Hall, and the Belfry—all just a short stroll away. To the left, a lively street is filled with restaurants and cafés. There’s also a taxi stand conveniently located at the riverside entrance. My room was spacious, with a big comfortable bed, a large window overlooking the street, and a loft-style bathroom. (Tip: travellers who find stairs difficult should request a room with bedroom and bathroom on the same level.) I was delighted to find a handwritten welcome card and a small box of pralines waiting for me when I checked in—such a thoughtful touch. Breakfast was served in a beautiful, cosy room, with a spread that was both generous and delicious. The staff throughout were warm, friendly, and attentive, ensuring that my stay was as comfortable as possible. I especially appreciated their care before I even arrived: shortly after my booking, they emailed to ask if I needed any special arrangements, and later followed up to alert me that I was arriving on Car-Free Sunday, providing helpful directions so my driver could drop me close to the hotel. I truly couldn’t have asked for more. Staying at 1898 The Post created a very special memory of my visit to Ghent, and I would certainly choose the same hotel again on a future visit.

Ghent FAQs: Tips for every trip

A Historical, Cultural and Culinary Gem

Located in the Flemish region of Belgium, the beautiful medieval city of Ghent is a city of history and romance. It's full of hidden historical, cultural and culinary gems that you can easily discover.

The Gravensteen or "Castle of the Count" is a deceptively enchanting sight dating back to the Middle Ages. Constructed by Philip of Alsace, the count of Flanders, it's partially surrounded by a moat and beautifully restored, and hosts an interesting museum about the history of prison life.

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Belfry of Ghent is a medieval tower overlooking the Old Town centre. Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church are the city's other two towers, with St. Nicholas' Church being one of the oldest landmarks in Ghent.

Enjoy a relaxing walk in the picturesque medieval streets and stop at one of the charming traditional restaurants for Belgium beer and a classic Flemish meat stew with French fries. Local delicacies include the popular Belgium chocolate and the purple jelly-filled candies called the "noses".

Antwerp International Airport is 32 miles away, while Brussels Airport is 34 miles. Just book your hotel, guest house, apartment, or B&B through Booking.com and discover everything this stunning city has to offer.

Interesting city, and less touristy than Brugge/Bruges, but with similar Flemish history and ambiance. There is a useful rail link from Gent to Lille Flandres in France that speeds the connection to Eurostar at Lille Europe, if continuing to the UK, with less hassle at the border control and security than at Bruxelles Midi.

Ghent is absolutely amazing!

Ghent is absolutely amazing! There is so much to explore and take in. The vibe is great - probably due to a large student population which keeps it progressive. So many bars and eateries and amazing architecture. Less twee / chocolate box / touristy than nearby Bruges. I really recommend staying to Ghent. Could use it as a base to visit Bruges and Brussels as both close on train. (We did stay in Brussels for 2 nights but wishes we had foregone in favour of Ghent as it was disappointing).

Well worth a visit.

Well worth a visit. Centre of the city is very picturesque to walk around. Lots of interesting architecture and sights. It’s a pity that Hôtel de Ville is not open for visitors as we had hoped to see the labyrinth. The tourist information office is hidden away and hard to find. Sint Jacob’s Kirk was the highlight.

Some very impressive buildings and always lovely to have a waterfront. We had come from Bruges which was very pretty, and so we felt 2 nights were perfect for Ghent. We enjoyed the castle (took the comedy audio), boat trip was informative and not too fast and the beer bar (think it was called the Dulle Griet).

It feels like an open-air museum, showcasing a stunning blend of different architectural styles. I was completely enchanted by its beauty! It is a city meant for getting lost in its winding alleys. Strolling along the scenic canals, especially around the Graslei and Korenlei, offers stunning views at every turn. What makes it special is also the contrast between the ancient medieval architecture and the vibrant, youthful energy filling the squares. During the weekend, you can find several spots and parks with open-to-the-public (and free) parties.

Me and my partner where traveling through Belgium and picked The Librarian in Gent as our choice. The room we had was on the top floor was nice and glad we upgraded to have the balcony as it gave more space to the room and was nice to end the night having a glass of wine and relax. The bed was comfy and the air-conditioning worked perfect during the hot weather during the trip. We have one small issue with the shower head but the hotel team sorted that out quickly and appreciate the quick response and repair being done ASAP.

This hotel is very convenient for the centre of Ghent. It is clean with acceptable facilities for a hotel of this grade. The decor was good, bed was comfortable and it had lift access to all floors. We stayed one night on our way back to the UK but will stay again when we go back to Ghent. For Belgium it is expensive but provides good value considering its location to the city centre. Public underground car parking is €12 and 5 minutes walk away. There is also EV facilities there too.
