We came in the middle of winter and the whole town was covered in snow. Can walk around and explore around the small lake town very easily. The beds were very comfortable. The common room was great for meeting other travellers and chatting. Also discovered Yukigassen!

Otaornai Backpacker's Hostel Morinoki is for free and independent travelers in Hokkaido Otaru. No good for small group or family. It is just 1.4 km away from Otaru Station and a 3-minute walk to Suitengu Temple. Otaru Canal is a 10-minute walk away. This hostel are only shared dormitory rooms. No private room. It has a free-use kitchen, a terrace and free Wi-Fi. All rooms are non-smoking. 30 steps to reach entrance. No elevator. The best hostel I've ever stayed in, quiet, felt like home. Wonderful owner and staff, I got a nice Japanese breakfast, too. Will hopefully come back soon!

Although the property is so conveniently close to the train station, my friend and I still managed to almost miss our train to Sapporo… Ryo saved the day and drove us to the train station, carried both of our massive luggage bags up to the ticket booth, and helped us buy tickets just in time!

Good facilities too: shower, bath, fridge and sauna!
