Hill End is an apt name as it is quite literally the end of the road. It is an amazingly authentic relic village of the gold rush era. I had never been there before and am glad I visited as it is genuine part of Australia economic history. We could have spent longer but certainly in one day a sense of the place is possible. A visit to Merlin's lookout is a must as is the Mining Museum on the way into Hill End - the most amazing collection of memorabilia form the gold rush era.

It is a fantastic place to visit and any stay will be too short.
Everyone in the town are super helpful and go out of their way to make sure your time spent ther is just perfection.
The only drawback is the lack of signage to places like panning for gold and museums/mines etc.

Hill End is a place for those interested in early Australian history with a number of old buildings and sites that are representative of the period. Photographers will enjoy the varied scenery. The town has limited options for meals with a hotel and cafe or the restaurant at the Hill End Lodge.

Unfortunately it was raining and my partner was unwell. The cafe served great coffee and food. I found it difficult to find written information about the history of the area and how to access tours etc

The town of Hill End is a beautiful place full of gold...
The town of Hill End is a beautiful place full of gold mining history and quaint mining cottages and 2 storey buildings, most brick, which reflects the wealth associated with the area. There is a free automated museum open all day which covers the mining and living conditions of the families and a visit to the various cemeteries in the area highlights the terrible infant death statistics and mining accidents.
A visit to the History Hill Museum is an insight to how the gold was mined and the museum has a large collection of original artifacts used by the people of that time. If you're lucky you could get to chat to the owner Malcolm who has lots of tales to tell. Try the local cafe, great food, really friendly staff and the gallery worth a look.
