The canal is lovely and the short canal boat trips are worth it for the information of the area. Orfeo (Italian Restaurant) was a great find. If you don't book before the day, it is worth wandering in to see if they have space. We went for a day to Ghent - and although the Cathedral is amazing, I preferred Bruges. A very pretty city, with an easily accessible Old Town. Many of the important sites are within easy walking distance and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy along the way.
