A calm retreat. This seventeenth century hunting lodge is set back in large mature gardens of three acres, and comes with a seasonally-heated swimming pool with wooden decking and covered limestone terrace, ancient barns, ornamental pond, pétanque court, croquet and table tennis facilities, an orchard of apple, pear, cherry, plum and peach trees, lawns and wild areas. In winter, a huge fireplace surrounded by comfortable sofas and a kitchen with a long oak dining table make for relaxed evenings. it is perfect for entertaining with friends and family. Dogs are welcome. It is also suitable for working breaks, with wifi throughout, and desks that can be provided on request. The house is located in the countryside between two villages and is very peaceful. There is a very good butcher and a bakers at the end of the road, with fuller amenities available a short drive away.
Fercé-sur-Sarthe is a pretty and quiet village on the Sarthe river from which one can take boat trips. Nearby villages to visit include the petite cite de charactere, Asnières-sur-Vègre, with twelfth century frescos in the church, Maigné, Malicorne with its local pottery, and La Flèche. There are a large number of historic chateaux close by. Le Mans, with its historic Plantagenet centre and the world famous 24 hours race, is a short drive. The area is excellent for kayaking and boat trips, hikes in the forests - this region is the most forested in France - and bicycle rides. Stock up on local produce of the region, including sable biscuits, rillette pate, goats cheese, and sparkling vouvray, chinon, saumur, and jasnières wines. The area is a good base for antiques hunting, both locally and in the nearby antiques centre of the Perche region. Angers, Tours, Nantes, Rennes, are all accessible at less than an hour's drive.
