Located overlooking the city’s Roman walls, The Hampton by Hilton York is opposite York Railway Station and a 10-minute walk from the historic center.

Although this one was further from the town than the one we thought we were staying in, it was lovely and really not that much further. Only thing missing was a space to have a cigar for my fiancé. Staff couldn't have been nicer.

This Georgian mansion is in York city center. It mixes original features with modern style and facilities, including car parking and free Wi-Fi.

The staff were especially friendly and quick to please. The room was spacious and with the high ceilings we felt like royalty. The food and drink were excellent. Parking i the courtyard was convenient. The location was superb - a short walk to the York gates. I would stay at the Churchill again and recommend it to anyone. One note, not a criticism, the rooms are not air conditioned, so a summer stay might be dicey from that perspective.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Very lovely City, Jorvik Centre, York Minster especially.

Very lovely City, Jorvik Centre, York Minster especially. Riverfront pleasant with reasonable eating places. Easy to get around. Good access to other areas such as the Moors and Dales - also worth a trip to Knaresborough which is only half an hour by train. The train museum also comes high on the list to visit, if you visit try the VR of the Flying Scotsman !! Only disappointment was The Shambles - not for us but plenty that was.

I wasn’t actually in the centre of York for this stay, out in one of the villages instead, but my previous visits to York have all been very positive. I noticed that there’s a park-and-ride very close to where I was staying - on another occasion that would be very useful!

York is a delightful city with a wealth of antiquity. The choice of cafes and restaurants was exceptional. The multitude of interesting tourist venues, such as the Cathedral, the National Railway Museum and river cruise options made for a very enjoyable stay.

Fantastic place to visit, lots of history, plenty of places to eat and drink, lots of shops & attractions to visit, parking can be expensive, we traveled by train for the first time as before we have come by car but wasn’t a problem and enjoyed the train journey 😊

York is surprisingly small so you can happily walk everywhere. We enjoyed lots of historical places and it was clear a lot of people go for the shopping and hen parties! The fantastic railway museum is free along with the 2 hour walking tour we booked. Yorkminster is well worth a visit with a very interesting museum within and climbing the main tower was a must. Fairfax House, a Georgian town house with such knowledgeable room guides was very interesting, along with the York Castle Museum and the Yorvik Viking Centre. We were told you have to visit Betty's Tea Rooms where we had a fat rascal! We had the most fun at the York Dungeons!

An amazing stay here. The staff are wonderful always on hand with a genuine warm smile and greeting to help your stay be special. The breakfast offer was delicious which sets you up for the day. Rooms are immaculate with an expresso coffee machine. A few hundred metres away from the hotel is York race course where you can walk around and then drop into York City Centre, around a 50 mins walk. A first class stay, unreservedly recommended and will be staying again.

The judges lodging is a boutique hotel in an old Georgian house full of character in the York city centre. We stayed for three nights in a feature double room. Toiletries were the white company, which was a nice touch. The room contained lovely period features and the bed was big and comfortable.
