The Sunny Side of Croatia
Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centered around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and featuring limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. It lies in a bay decorated with white sails of yachts, as sailing is definitely Split’s big thing!
The city is full of architectural gems, one of which is St. Duje’s Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the world, built in 305 AD and combining both Roman and Catholic influences. Nearby Varoš is a must-see, one of the city’s oldest parts, full of charming streets and beautiful houses.
Make sure you visit the Bačvice Beach and the Riva promenade, popular with locals and full of cafés and palm trees. While on the hunt for local specialities, try soparnik - wood fired dough filled with vegetables - or local soft drinks Pipi and Orela.

A side trip to Trogir, another to Hvar (maybe to both major towns) and another to Brač or maybe even Korčula, possibly a day in Omiš, and you could easily spend plenty more time here. The Old town is great to visit with plenty of scope for family. Food at the harbour front can be expensive. Better options are found inside the old town. We stayed in Strobec and hired a car. The Diocletian Palace is fabulous for restaurants and very old with plenty to see and enjoy. The port area is clean and great for onward ferry transport to the Islands. Excursions to local waterfalls and parks are possible. Split was a great place to visit. It has amazing history and a pretty waterfront. It was fun to walk around the old town and to walk up to Marjon Hill and view the city and waterfront. It is a very crowded port though and much more touristy than the other places in Croatia we visited. The centre with Diocletian Palace is magnificent, but there are many other things to see around the town. Like Park Marjan. Split is easy to walk around, alternatively Uber is very reasonably priced and available and we used it a lot. There are many excelent restaurants in Split, but if you are after authentic Dalmatian food I recommend restaurants with the word 'Konoba' in its name. There seem to be more of those on the west side of Split (close to Park Marjan). If you are after more higher class cuisine, I would recommend restaurant "Dvor" with magnificent views of the sea. If you can, do not go to Split during the tourist season. Too many people with predictable consequences. Locals were suggesting end of September/beg October. And finaly, try Dalmatian octopus.
