Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centered around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and featuring limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. Split is great.
Split is great. We were there for eight days and it was a great place by itself and also a great jumping-off point for day trips to islands, national parks, and Dubrovnik. Here's the problem, though: go there to learn and enjoy and support local small businesses. Be respectful of the understandably proud Croatians who live and work there. Just do it.
Just do it. It's a great place for a long weekend or a short week. Any longer and you might get bored. I went there to go sailing around the islands. I stayed in Split Old Town for 2 days before and 3 days after. Which was just right for me. A calming place and very civilised. We found it not too expensive and enjoyed dining out on the Riva Promenade,. It is very easy to get around by boat, service bus or tuk-tuk.
