The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic center were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbor and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbor to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and sidewalk cafés. Also here are the 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.
The Alghero accommodations on Booking.com include 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

Beautiful beach resort and mediaeval walled town, lots to see, loads of great restaurants and bars. We are indie beer heads and were well catered for with bars like Il Tocco Al Prete and L'altra vineria.

The wall city is so beautiful and full of history.
The wall city is so beautiful and full of history. All restaurant staff and shop keepers were very friendly. I had lost one of the nose rests for my glasses and a lovely lady Optometrist stopped what she was doing and took 10 minutes to replace both nose rests. Charged 5 euros .Worth every penny all delivered with her beautiful smile.
Lovely town, our time there was too short!

Food turned out to be a bit pricey (I mean, how much can a plate of pasta cost?). Otherwise, quite a small town catering to tourists mostly. Worth renting a vehicle (a moto or a car) and discover nearby small beaches.

Alghero is a small city, but there was enough to keep us occupied for a week. Hired bikes & cycled to Fertilia & the beach at Le Bombarde (easy cycle & mostly on separated cycle routes. Great boat trip to Grotta di Nettuno, lovely local archaological museum & museum of the red coral the area is famous for. Loads of restaurant choice & great produce.

We had 2 days there.
We had 2 days there. Picturesque town and a good base to explore the region with sites and other towns not far away. Ie the grotto at Capo Caccia (nearly 700 steps to get back to the top) and the small coastal village of Bosa along with the coastal road Bosa.

The town itself is great.
The town itself is great. Laid back, slow and relaxed life in beautiful surroundings. One of those experiences that you would have watched in countless movies - brought to life here. Great sea food. Beaches. There are caves to be explored, if you plan it well.
The unsettling part is commuting from Airport to the town, if you are taking the last flight from Rome. By the time the flight lands, there are no cabs available as all the cabs have returned to the town and they are not coming back. Uber is of no use. The only option is the bus which runs at a frequency of 45 mins. So, you lose a bus and you are stuck for 45 mins, waiting - late night. So be informed, rush to catch the bus. Forget cabs!

We had a fantastic stay at Villa Marianna. Monica and Graziella were incredibly welcoming. The property was beautiful, with a very clean and comfortable room and well-maintained grounds. The pool area was perfect for relaxing, and the secure parking added peace of mind. It was the perfect base for exploring northwest Sardinia, just a 5-minute drive to a large free carpark near plenty of restaurants in Alghero. We highly recommend this property for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.
Nice hotel for short stay in Alghero. Hotel and rooms are a bit of old fashioned, but clean and properly equipped. Some rooms with the view to the sea, however it's partial view only. Good and relatively reach breakfast when compared to other places in Italy. Parking available. Staff is very helpful.
Dyaa and Maria are amazing hosts! You can feel like a family there. They are so helpful- told us about culture of Sardinia, drove us to the airport and even gave us basil and oregano, which we season our dishes today. The breakfast was delicious. We will definitely go back there.
Great hotel right in the centre of the old town. Lovely breakfast in the cloisters each morning with a goop9d choice. Very nice friendly staff. Would highly recommend this hotel best location in Alghero
