A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Beautiful seaside city, especially Ortigia having minimal traffic and mainly pedestrianised.
Restaurants with great seafood and we really liked their variety of Sicilian grapes wines.

Syracuse is easily reached by car or public transportation.
Syracuse is easily reached by car or public transportation. Buses go to Catania airport nearly every hour. Also, there are local shuttle busses that circle around the island of Ortigia and the city center. We found all the shop owners and restaurant staff to be friendly and professional! All of the restaurants and cafes are well staffed and service is prompt, and food served quickly.
Hundreds of tourists and school groups moving around through town but by no means chaotic. We found a real gem of a restaurant: COD DA SARETTA, MERLUZZO FRITTO, Via maestranza 134, Via Nizza, 8- Don't Miss It! Tiny little place but one of the best meals we had in a month in Sicily! Huge portions, great value - the best Fritto Misto (mixed fried seafood) ever.

Ortigia is a great place with reach history, and great monuments and old buildings. It is very walkable with mainly pedestrian areas, but definetely it's worth to spend 1 or 2 nights there (or even more depending on your interests and purpose of travel) otherwise you will miss the evenings. Especially at the weekend there are many people, it is very lively and you can enjoy different kind of bars and some music. Sure, it can be loud on weekends, but that's normal for such a place, but after 0:00 h the loud music from the bars stops, and I think this is great place suitable for both young and elder people. For me personally, as a seafood lover - the fish market is a must see in the morning and have lunch or dinner at reastaurants around there wih plenty of fresh fish and seafood.

Ortigia was very easy to get around on foot and even the archeological park in Siracusa is walkable in 30 minutes. All the major sites are close together and can be visited within a day. Although the centre is busy it is easy to find quieter areas to explore There is a wide selection of good restaurants

Attraction packed city in Sicilia.
Attraction packed city in Sicilia. The old city of Ortigia holds at least a day’s worth of exploring, strolling and eating. Plus some lovely beaches. Attractions outside of the old city are within easy walking distance, and will hold most travelers attention for at least half a day.

We have been traveling all around Italy for many years. For 1 week we also have been all around Sicily. This is the best apartment we have ever been to. If we ever go again to Siracusa there is no other place we would stay. Location is fine. The apartment itself is absolutely gorgesous. The host was soooooo nice, although the whole communication was only via Whatsapp. Dont hesisate rent this apartment!!!
This our second stay at this hotel and hopefully will not be our last when visiting Sicily. The hotel has a unique ambiance and is located within walking distance to Siracusa centre and Ortigia. The staff are very friendly and always ready to help. Breakfast is very good and the hotel restaurant serves a fine selection of food. On site secure parking is also a bonus. We love the place!
Amazing, such a beautiful palace. Location and service were 10/10. Cleanliness… everything was flawless. The juniour suite was the most beautiful hotel room I’ve seen in Sicily. Special thanks to Silivia, who was extremely helpful and went out her way to tell us where to go and see the Perseides meteor shower. Also to Angelo for being so polite and immaculate!
The room is big, the place was clean. It is within walking distance from Ortigia. There’s a nice bar for breakfast right under the apartment building. Lots of free parking options (first time we could park easily during our stay in Sicily). Salvatore was extremely helpful and very kind. We totally recommend this place, and will come back some day for sure!
Great location. A beautifully appointed apartment, spacious living areas and bathroom and the best equipped of anywhere we have stayed in Sicily or Italy. Really lovely relaxed place to stay.
