The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza drenched with vibrant pink blossoms, you might have to pinch yourself. The amazing location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
But wait, there's more. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the largely intact Greek Theater has amazing views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Great summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars feature live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, with a clock tower and church overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the center of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the southwest, there's a long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and to the north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you'd expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there's no shortage of places to stay in Taormina on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, centrally located apartments and luxury B&Bs.

Sadly Taormina has become another charming city to succomb to mass tourism. The main street has mostly shops you will find anwhere in the world (to a few exceptions) and too many restaurants. Shopping is not our priority when visiting cities or villages. You can do that at your local mall or even on line. Regretfully, we can't recommend staying at Taormina. Though we had a good time, it has been overhyped. It's OK for a one day trip...maybe... Taormina is a lovely city with lots to see and easy access...
Taormina is a lovely city with lots to see and easy access to Etna and other local sites. The city is built on a hill and a level of fitness is required to get around on foot, lots of steps up the hills. Local bus runs regularly to help you get around. Beautiful little town.
Beautiful little town. I was there to attend a language school (Babilonia), so was there for 8 nights. The restaurants are great. Town is super busy though. Was there in early May. Was told it gets much busier for summer. I would definitely return!Guest review byWendyCanada - Review score

Taormina (top town) is a lovely town with lots of interesting shops and good restaurants. As with most places in Sicily, it also has some interesting historic buildings. It is a scary place to drive up to though and there is nowhere to park in the centre for tourists. We used the cable car to go down to the beach area; it was nice enough down there but most of the beach areas around the area at the foot of the cable car seem to be siphoned off as private beaches attached to hotels or restaurants (although we didn't spend a lot of time trying to find a public beach).Guest review bySandraUnited Kingdom
