A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.
Walkability, Uber available, felt safe at night. Buildings nicely lit in evening, lots of eating options.
Hop on Hop off bus took a long time to arrive- only every 30 min. Take tuk tuk as much faster.

Syracuse is easily reached by car or public transportation.
Syracuse is easily reached by car or public transportation. Buses go to Catania airport nearly every hour. Also, there are local shuttle busses that circle around the island of Ortigia and the city center. We found all the shop owners and restaurant staff to be friendly and professional! All of the restaurants and cafes are well staffed and service is prompt, and food served quickly.
Hundreds of tourists and school groups moving around through town but by no means chaotic. We found a real gem of a restaurant: COD DA SARETTA, MERLUZZO FRITTO, Via maestranza 134, Via Nizza, 8- Don't Miss It! Tiny little place but one of the best meals we had in a month in Sicily! Huge portions, great value - the best Fritto Misto (mixed fried seafood) ever.

Ortigia is a great place with reach history, and great monuments and old buildings. It is very walkable with mainly pedestrian areas, but definetely it's worth to spend 1 or 2 nights there (or even more depending on your interests and purpose of travel) otherwise you will miss the evenings. Especially at the weekend there are many people, it is very lively and you can enjoy different kind of bars and some music. Sure, it can be loud on weekends, but that's normal for such a place, but after 0:00 h the loud music from the bars stops, and I think this is great place suitable for both young and elder people. For me personally, as a seafood lover - the fish market is a must see in the morning and have lunch or dinner at reastaurants around there wih plenty of fresh fish and seafood.

Ortigia was very easy to get around on foot and even the archeological park in Siracusa is walkable in 30 minutes. All the major sites are close together and can be visited within a day. Although the centre is busy it is easy to find quieter areas to explore There is a wide selection of good restaurants

Attraction packed city in Sicilia.
Attraction packed city in Sicilia. The old city of Ortigia holds at least a day’s worth of exploring, strolling and eating. Plus some lovely beaches. Attractions outside of the old city are within easy walking distance, and will hold most travelers attention for at least half a day.

We really enjoyed our stay there. The owners were great, welcoming. The place was nice with outside pool. Breakfast was absolutely fantastic as the pastries was homemade, I was always looking forward to next morning.
Only thing what was not that good for us, we haven't had a car ( seems like a mistake in all Sicily) if you not planing known places and cities.
But we get to Siracusa by the bus pretty easily. And the coast around property was stunnin, and highly recommend to visit Punta della Mola.
everything: the place is very well decorated and well equipped, everything is super clean, beds are very confortable and the location is great. breakfast is really good and the host was very accommodating.
THE TRUE JEM OF THE PLACE IS SIMONA. she is one of the nicest person I have met in a hotel, always minding and helping people + she makes the best granita in Sicily.
Staff were very helpful and very pleasant to deal with. Staff were amazing!! Perhaps the most helpful and accommodating of all the hotels we stayed at in Sicily. The Breakfast was great! It was plentiful with many delicious options. Service was top notch. Served in a beautiful setting. We will stay here again when we return. Highly recommend!
Location was amazing - great for seeing Sicily by car or wandering around Siracusa’s magic
