An Icon of Liberalism
Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded on 3 sides by water, it is spread over steep hills that make for great photo opportunities. None better than the zig-zag Lombard Street seen in many a film. Other movie stars are the streetcars plying the hill climbs – a little touristy, but still worth trying.
In the middle of the bay is Alcatraz island, famed for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t fancy going inside, the views towards the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere in San Francisco is life more laidback than on the Pacific beaches. Hire a bike and head out there via the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. The clam chowder served in (yes, actually in!) bread is a delight. Chinatown also has a great selection of good value restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want to stay in apartments along those lines, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something to suit. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here.

San Francisco is on the upswing.
San Francisco is on the upswing. It has great shopping, food, and attractions. I only saw a couple of bums at a distance in the main area of the city. The greatness that was is gone but not forgotten. Too much drug, homelessness, poverty around every corner has had its effect. Closed businesses that were landmarks make for a sad experience outside of the hotel. I didn't have a clue that this town is so heavily struck by homelessness and the opioid epidemic. Basically all downtown areas, even the busiest places are full of miserable homeless drug addicts. I haven't experienced any violence or aggressiveness by them, still it was scary walking around the Market St - Tenderloin areas after dark. The bayside areas, Fisherman's Wharf and the places around looked much better though. So all in all, unfortunately it was an unpleasant part of my US vacation and the least appealing city of all that I visited during my 2-week trip in the States.Guest review byDanielSweden - Review score

San Francisco is a lovely city by day with loads to see and do. Pier 39, cycling over Golden Gate bridge is a must and Alcatraz by night. However, I do recommend walking around this city after dark. There is alot of homeless around the city and some become aggressive , shouting and following you even though in a group of 4. I wouldn't want to be in a group of only females. Sheets were clean but matress was covered in a certain protection that indicates they had issues with bed bugs (we had no problem with).
