Founded in 1585, the Brazilian city of João Pessoa is the capital of Paraíba and a popular tourist destination with sandy beaches, tropical blue waters and lush greenery. Featuring colonial architecture, modern buildings and historic landmarks, this coastal paradise is worth a visit.
One of oldest cities in Brazil, João Pessoa is home to significant attractions like Science Station designed by Oscar Niemeyer and the iconic Cabo Branco Lighthouse in Cabo Branco. The Baroque church of São Franscisco is a beautiful 18th-century building with Portuguese tiles and excellent wooden doors.
The beaches of Cabo Branco, Tambau, Manaira, Ponta de Seixas and Barra de Gramme are famous for their amazing landscape and the crystal waters of the South Atlantic Ocean. Travellers can savour regional specialities, visit one of the large shopping centres or mix with the locals and experience the Brazilian hospitality.
Presidente Castro Pinto International Airport is about 15 km from the city centre and has flights to Brasília and Rio de Janeiro. Booking.com offers a great variety of hotels, guest houses, hostels and apartments in João Pessoa and the nearby cities of Conde, Lucena and Jacumã.
João Pessoa is as perfect as a beach city can get.
João Pessoa is as perfect as a beach city can get. It has numerous historical places from Brazil's colonization years, vast beaches that can be considered one of the best urban beaches in the whole countries and excellent tour guides to interesting places a little further.

Jampa has really beautiful beaches with clean, warm water.
Jampa has really beautiful beaches with clean, warm water. The beachfront has a long, lively promenade with lots of restaurants and bars. The Cabo Branco / Tambaú areas are safe and relatively calm. The historic center of João Pessoa is in a very poor state of repair and offers little to visitors except for the San Francisco cultural centre (housed in a former monastery and church). This is a place for a beach holiday, not sightseeing.

Joao Pessoa was surprising to me.
Joao Pessoa was surprising to me. I was expecting a "beach town" but the downtown area was quite upscale with first rate looking condominiums and other high rise buildings. It is considered a good city to retire in. Of course, the beaches were very nice and relaxing. Joao Pessoa does have its "tourist season" in the summer but since we were there in the winter it was not crowded and was easy to get around.
We visited several beaches including Mar Doce Lar in Cabedelo. Lots of beach space and hot food and drinks were available as well.
We ate at several different restaurants: churrascaria (Picanha do Bastos), pizza (JoJo), seafood (Ancoradouro), all the food was very fresh and flavorful. Even the food and drink offered at various beaches we visited was surprisingly delicious. Of course, we tried many flavors of caipirinhas and we even stopped at Dona Branca where we could sample a variety of caipirinhas and see where the various cachacas were fermenting!

João Pessoa is a very nice city to travel to.
João Pessoa is a very nice city to travel to. Clean, safer than Natal (where I live). Plenty of things to do day and night. Good for couples, families, those who are looking for quiet and relaxing spots, as well as for those who are looking for busier places such as bars and restaurants. It's got options for everyone literally. Easy access to beaches, descent roads/streets. I like Bar do Cuscuz, but arriving early, around 11h30-12h is ideal, especially with kids if you want them in the playzone, so you can keep an eye on them (by the way, R$ 19.90 per kid). We also went to a lovely Italian restaurant called Familia Franco. What a nice place with great food. The owner is a very nice guy. On Saturdays evening they have live music.

João Pessoa is a good balance of quiet and movement city, if you are looking for calm beaches, some rest and local craftsmanship stores. Prices are not expensive considering other Northeast Brazilian destinations, people are friendly and there some good destinations to reach from there.
Hotels around Tambaú area have most food and beverage places in a walking distance and are bit noisier in holidays. Manaria, Bessa and Cabo Branco are quieter but you need a short Uber ride, 5 to 10 minutes to reach restaurants and beach spots, which is cheap and quick.
Most beach locations offer umbrellas in the beach and seats for a fee as well food and beverages for a reasonable price.

Joao Pessoa is overlooked by international tourists who visit the northeast of Brazil, but they shouldn't! While the neighbor states' capitals of Natal and Recife have more tourists, JP has beautiful beaches, historic churches and buildings and a few great restaurants--all at reasonable prices. Sunset at Jacare beach nearby is not to be missed--they play Ravel's "Bolero" on a saxaphone in a boat as the sun sets (Jurandy do sax is in the Guinness Book of World records for playing this song more times than anybody else).
This hotel It's all about location. It's across from the beach, and walking distance from all major craft fairs ‐ 1min to 10min walk. Hotel offers a simple and good breakfast. Staff is polite and some of them are glad to share their knowledge of the area. Garage is limited and works on fiirst come, first serve which means there is a chance to park the car on the streets overnight. Bedroom is very basic and equally basic necessities. The highlight is for the bathroom shower powerful water pressure.
Everything old and in decay and not very clean. I had to take out hair of the sink to make the water drain away. Small shower entrance, I don't know if big people can enter. Breakfast was o.k. Of course you pay for the location on the boulevard (seaview sideways) but for this price I would expect better. The hotel desperately needs some professional.love and care.
The staff at the hotel was very friendly and eager to help. One waitress at breakfast, Andrea, was especially friendly and helpful and made our mornings special. The breakfast buffet itself was incredible. The hotel arranged a tour of Olinda for us. And a ride to the airport when we checked out. The location, right across from the beach was great, too.
This is a great hotel. Our room was spacious and clean with clean sheets and towels. Shower had hot water and good pressure. Air-conditioning works well. Breakfast was excellent. The staff are very nice, especially the lady at breakfast. Location was in a safe area and a short walk to the beach and restaurants.
The hotel offers a very good infrastructure and its facilities are very well mantained. Service is good and staff very friendly and helpful too. Overal decoration and design is of good taste. Elegant from the inside and it offers a large parking space accessible from the back street.
Warning, don't book.
Didn't like the attitude I received when tried to check in. This hotel should not be on booking .com, as it is a let Down.. the pool is filthy, there is no wifi . They just cut all cost down.. pity as the building is lush.. mostly residence live there..
The property is brand new and very clean. It has everything for a living - the liners, kitchen utensils are all available for use. The trash bin is at the same floor so very convenient. We’ve stayed here twice and definitely will come back if we visit Joao Pessoa later!
Location is right on the beach. Nice rooms, the breakfast is excellent, very good facility, The pool is small, but the hotel is relatively as well - but right across from the beach and lots of great restaurants around.
EVERYTHING! Just don’t book a tour through the hotel unless you want a massive amount of people going with you. Other than that, we loved everything and the staff are extremely kind!
At check-in, all the reception staff were incredibly nice, especially Amanda. Indoor parking was a plus. The location is very good. That is all I liked about this hotel.
habitaciones excelelentes... sector piscina impecable en confort y visual de playa. Cafe da manha muy bueno y variado. Personal del Hotel amable y predispuesto siempre.
This hotel is very good. The location might just be the best of any in the area. Steps away from Cabo Branco Beach and the many restaurants and outdoor food locations.
All the people who work in this hotel are so kind!
the bed wasn’t that comfy but I stayed only one night to be close to the bus station so it was all perfect!
