Pelourinho is the old neighborhood of the city of Salvador—it's where Salvador began. Many of the buildings in this area date back to the 16th Century. Any visit to Salvador would be incomplete without a trip to Pelourinho.
This neighborhood was the seat of Imperial Portuguese power in Brazil starting in 1549.
While at times, this neighborhood may seem a bit like Disneyland Brazil (with the many women dressed as Bahianas bugging you to take a photo with them & then trying to charge you R$20 for the pic), I still recommend you come.
There are the many churches to visit (Church of Sao Francisco, aka “the golden church” and the Cathedral of Santissimo Salvador); there is much beautiful architecture to admire; there is a wonderful hotel right in the heart of Pelourinho (Hotel Villa Bahia—I highly recommend it); you can visit the Elevador Lacerda; there are lots of souvenir shops. If you have more time and the interest, you could take a capoeira lesson. If you are short on time, you can get a guided tour in golf cart that lasts about 2 hours and costs somewhere between R$150 to R$250, depending on how much bargaining you feel like doing.
There are ice cream shops, bars and restaurants you can visit (although I think some of the best restaurants are located just outside, but not far from Pelourinho).
The reason I do not give this neighborhood 5 stars is because of the beggars and the potential risk of crime—use common sense and don’t wander into deserted side streets late at night and you will be fine.

Salvador’s cobblestoned central old town, Pelourinho, is the place to be. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and music is everywhere, especially Tuesday nights and on weekends. This area is not large so wandering around is easy and fun. People watching is great here. Be careful in crowds because pickpockets do operate in Salvador. Police provide good security to keep this area safe – wandering too far outside is not recommended, especially at night.
Salvador’s main square in the Pelourinho, Terreiro de Jesus, is surrounded by bars and sometimes has performers during the day. Taxis can be found here. It leads into our favorite nighttime square, Largo do Cruzeiro de Sao Francisco that has restaurants where you can sit outside and enjoy music. You should try a unique Bahia dish such as Moqueca, a rich fish stew.
Three of Salvador’s squares have been set up with stages offering music shows many days. Largo Pedro Arcanjo and Largo Tereza Batista are accessed from the streets Gregorio De Matos and Largo Quincas Berro D’Agua from Rua V.C. Rarelo. The shows are often free or have small cover charges (unless a big name band comes in). You can stand and dance or sit at a table enjoying a drink or meal at several restaurants.

Avoid guys offering you "free" Fitas (colorful ribbon) as a gift to you as a Friend.
Also avoid side streets which can be dangerous for foreigners.
Also after sunset be aware for areas not covered by Military Police because it can be tricky

Take care!
Watch twice!
Never be alone!
Never take your belongs out of your pocket or bagpack! Better, don't take them with you!
Never talk to someone along the street (could be a distraction or a sign to someone else)
Never enter in the small alleys that you find there, could be a trap!
Never depend on the cops, they won't help you out!
Don't look too much to someone here
Yeah, think 50 times before you come here.

Excellent staff, great common area. Wonderful hostel for meeting friends. Great area outside of the main tourist drag of the Pelourinho. I ended up extending my stay and stayed for almost 10 days here because I felt very comfortable. Probably my favorite hostel of my 10 week travel in Brasil.
The hotel is very well located in the Pelourinho district. The room is very spacious with a great view from the balcony. It is very clean and has a well functioning AC since it was very hot outside.
This is a very cute, compact apartment right in the city’s historic Pelourinho district and within an easy walk of San Antonio do Carmo neighborhood. Nice sea view and everything you need for a long weekend stay. Building is quiet and air conditioning in apartment works well. Washington, the host, was a breeze to work with and very kind.
Hostel has good amenities and very good location on the heart of Pelourinho
The staff specially Maru was very attentive, I had a situation at night (some of my belongings that were next to me on the bed were stolen while I was sleeping) and Maru showed willingness at all time to help me out even when I had already checked out (had an early flight so had to leave without solving the situation)
The hotel is beautiful and very well situated for walking around the Pelourinho. the front desk staff was super helpful and spoke excellent English. communication was fantastic before and during my stay. The full breakfast was yummy. highly recommend. Super nice hotel.
fantastic location in old colonial building in Pelourinho! you can reach all places by walk in centro. Claudio his uncle and father running the place and they doing great job. Very nice breakfast served on the terrace with view of Bahia and ilha Itaparica. Breakfast was tasty n rich with lot of fruits and great coffee. Good value for money, welcoming people around you. We would stay even longer but hotel was fully booked.
Good value proposition. Fair/clean/solid breakfast hotel, in a good / safe location and walkable distance to Farol da Barra and less than 10min car to Pelourinho.
Beautiful hotel, situated near Pelourinho and historic center. Amazing colonial architecture and excellent service by the staff. Great view of the city from the rooftop bar and swimming pool
