we had a short one-night stay here. the hotel is furnished with a really eclectic vibe. the room itself was quite spacious and had extra amenities like drinks and snacks. i wish that we were there to check out the bottle shop/bar when it was open but it was closed for the holiday. appreciated the free coffee and hot croissants in the morning as well.

We typically have terrible experiences when staying at hotels, but not at Ohtel! We had such a wonderful experience at this small boutique hotel. Staff is so welcoming and accommodating (everything from requesting milk preferences prior to arrival so you have what you need in the morning, to a late check out to coordinate with our mid-afternoon flight). We stayed in one of the suites with a large spa-like soaking tub. Rooms are decorated in a fun retro style but still felt contemporary and inviting with views of the park and harbor. Our reservation included breakfast, which was lovely (eggs, skillet potatoes, bacon, roasted tomatoes, sourdough bread) completely cooked to order. Location of the hotel is a short walk to restaurants, grocery store, Te Papa museum, etc. Ticked every box!

This sanctuary was one of my favourite places on this trip...
This sanctuary was one of my favourite places on this trip and in my travels.
It reminded me of the committed and hopeful people who volunteered to build and re-build places like CERES in East Brunswick, the Abbottsford Convent in Collingwood & the monkey sanctuary on the Garden Route in South Africa.

This is a truly a fantastic place to go.
This is a truly a fantastic place to go. I spent almost a whole day there and really wanted to go back for a second (your ticket allows 2 days entry) but I didn't have time. It is stunning bush filled with native birds and tuatara. The undertaking to rid the area of predators and introduced species is mind blowing and well worth the trip.
