Cachi is a wonderful little town in a complete colonial style situated at 2500 meters altitude. This helps with the temperature, which is around 25 degrees while it’s 30+ in Cafayate. Around the large square with tall, shady trees, there are several restaurants. All Argentine towns have such a large square, green and with shady trees. The squares, which are always called 9th of July Square or another famous date, attract both tourists and locals, and especially in the evening, there is a rich social life with music and performances. As always, people sit and drink mate tea from characteristic cups with built-in straws. Read more here: https://www.inditravel.org/en/salta-cafayate-cachi-road-trip-argentina/

If you want to go hiking from a very basic town then it’s great. I guess. But if you want anything else out of the town forget it. Zero. 58 km of dirt road each direction is not remotely worth the view. There are amazing views all over Argentina, if the town even had one interesting aspect fine but it doesn’t. Most people we saw there were sitting waiting for the next bus out. Nothing to do if you don’t hike. Sorry IRUYA, the rest of Argentina is amazing, you’re very ordinary by comparison.

Planning my trip to North Argentina, I have booked 2 days at San Antonio de Los Cobres. Fortunatelly, I have had some reviews about the town before going there and changed my plans to only one day. It was the best thing I could have done. San Antonio de Los Cobres is windy, poor, dirty and cold. It has not has any of the charm from the little pueblos up north or anything amazing to see.

Our visit to Cafayete was incredible.

Our visit to Cafayete was incredible. The Domos del Viento were an experience in themselves with spectacular vistas, beautiful clear blue skies by days, sunsets over the mountain scapes, and brilliant starlit nights uncluttered by city lights. The Quilmes ruins are meticulously preserved and maintained, and the visitor centre displays function in Spanish, English and other languages. Various wineries have tastings, restaurants and accommodations up and down the valley (if you can’t get a reservation at the Domos). The food in local restaurants varies from simple to sophisticated but always featuring local cuisine and ingredients. The people are welcoming and helpful. And I suppose I should mention that the local Cafayete wines are excellent by the glass and even better by the bottle.

We stayed 2 nights and it was just right. I regret the museum was not open when we were there. A recent storm had knocked out the internet in the whole town and only one restaurant had it working. The main square is a charming oasis of green in the white-washed town that is clean and inviting.

    Salta was a pleasant surprise.

Salta was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately we were just passing through for 1 day. We just had enough time to do a self guided walk around Plaza 9 de Julio and a couple of blocks either side. But there was a lot to see and do just at Plaza 9 de Julio alone. I particularly liked Cabildo Historico (the historical Salta museum) it was free entry and very interesting. The Cathedral on the opposite side of the square is beautifully and ornately decorated inside. MAAM (the museum with the Mummies of Liullaillaco) was fascinating. It's paid entry, but worth it, to see something very unique. Would have loved to have seen Iglesia Y Museo San Francisco, didn't realise that it shuts between 1230 - 1600. Should have stopped here first when we walked past in the morning on our way to Plaza 9 de Julio. Also had some lovely epanadas for lunch at Dona Salta.

It's a cute little town with many interesting shops, museum, restaurants and wineries. It has the first wine ice cream boutique in the world. The main square and downtown are easily walkable, but to get to some of the better wineries and goat cheese factory etc you need transportation. Our hotel provided bicycles.
