One of the most charming and historic places in Europe. Beaches are essentially non-existent, small rocky and crowded which is generally true for all of The Dalmatian Coast
Central on the Dalmatian Coast for day trips. Old town is quite nice and all walkable. The people are lovely. The rest of the town is fairly prosaic. Day trips include Islands, inland parks, Sibnnik, or just hang at the beach.
Sibenik (English pronunciation she-ben-ICK) has a lovely little old town and the greater city is situated between several points of interest for us. We recommend checking out the Cathedral, and city forts as well as wandering the old city streets for souvenirs. The beach was also well maintained and pleasant between peak use hours. We are pale people, and the sun keeps us in the shade during those peak hours anyway. Parking was a bit tricky to find, particularly in the less expensive hourly places. Keeping in mind we were there in the middle of high tourist season, the beach parking, if you are sticking around for half a day, was a good find. The best meals we found to eat were both on the waterfront. Bounty is a farm to table kind of place, with mid range prices and amazing food. We had bread, mussels, and octopus stew. Service was friendly and prompt. Sesula is a "riba i sendvic" or seafood and sandwich place we stopped at for lunch. We enjoyed one cod and one "Dalmatian" sandwich, and drinks. The atmosphere is very casual and beachside friendly.
Great base to explore Dalmatia. Sibenik old town very nearby, 5 minutes away from big supermarkets. 10-minute drive to Zaboric, which also has a great beach. Another nice half day trip (late afternoon, stay for dinner) is the fortress of Knin, about 1 hour drive. And of course Krka National Park with the Skradinsk Buk waterfall where you can swim at the base of the waterfall. Use the national park entrance at Skradin and then you take a boat ride (included in the entrance fee) to the main waterfall. After the visit to the park, drive to Konoba Vinko restaurant on the D33 from Sibenik to Knin for a lovely local Croatian dinner, try the suckling pig! The beach in front of Nakic apartments (just cross the road, but beware of the busy traffic) is quite nice and suitable for kids. But ensure that you have water shoes as it is a pebble beach with lots of rocks in the water.
Dubrovnik is still a great city to visit, but compared to earlier visits it is very crowded, noisy and generally not a good value, compared to other places in Dalmatia, when it comes to eating out. It was annoying to find that a very mediocre restaurant charged a cover charge, not encountered in many other Croatian places. Ordinary tap water was also not available to customers even though it is a common practice elsewhere.
Dubrovnik has the best walled city / fortification on the Dalmatian coast - but not the only one. It is horribly crowded and the areas outside the access gates are really congested. We spent part of one day walking the old town and that was plenty. The walls and ruins in Kotor and Split aren't as popular but both places are impressive and much more relaxed.
Dubrovnik is not a massive city so it is easy to navigate. The usual sites such as the city walls, cable car, Lokrum Island are all worth a visit. The old city itself is beautiful and well worth an explore. The main street Stradun is easily the busiest and therefore most expensive, it's worth an explore down the many side streets for food, drink and atmosphere. There is plenty of varying cuisine and a few options for Dalmatian food. There is a quiet beach called Sveti Jakob if you dont mind the extra 20 min walk. Drinking is fairly expensive so it might be worth a Google to see where locals drink. We found the Buzz bar to be more purse friendly. Souvenirs are a plenty but we found most of the stuff for sale was made in China and not locally produced, which was a bit disappointing. We also did the day trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina and seen the Kravice Waterfalls and Mostar bridge, well worth the visit.
Stayed in Split for 3 days after having travelled for 10 days from Dubrovnik up the Dalmatian coast. Liked the history, easy walking access to everything in and around the palace. Good cafes and restaurants. Lively bars on waterfront later at night. Enjoyed the walking tours. Great way to learn about the history and layout of city. (Serena Tours.)
Amazing maze of old streets. Wish we'd had more time to explore. Great location to catch a cruise to the Dalmatian islands.
Super clean and beautiful historic city. The city is completely different from other cities on the Dalmatian coast. Dubrovnik is slammed with tourists. Would recommend a few days in Dubrovnik and heading up the coast and visiting various islands for a relaxing trip.
The stay at Penthouse in old Dalmatian house was a wonderful experience. The apartment is clean, well decorated with all the amenities you could need. The photos are very accurate but the view from the balcony is even better in person. It's a short walk to the main area of town and felt private, quiet and safe. It is up the hill so there will be stairs but we did not have a problem with it. Anita was very nice and accommodating to our schedule for checking in and out. We definitely recommend staying here.
Kastel Stari, Kaštela
The property was exceptionally clean, the hosts Jelena & Zeljko were very welcoming, the view from the entire apartment was incredible and the town was peaceful and safe! The apartment is also surrounded by a number of restaurants and cafes all within walking distance. We landed late at night and really liked the fact that there were basic supplies on arrivals such as milk, juice, bread cheese and ham in the fridge. We were welcomed with a wonderful platter of local cheese and Dalmatian Prosciutto!
Great apartment. Newly and tastefully furnished, well kept and equipped, spotlessly clean. All the amenities you would need: dishwasher, laundry machine, coffee machines, hair dryer, new AirPlay enabled TV - if you have time to watch TV, that is! Gorgeous terrace to indulge in the sun, with unobstructed view of Rogoznica bay. Rather easy to find. Partially shaded parking is abundant - which is a rather rare occurrence in Dalmatian towns. Loved every minute of our stay!
The views from the balconies and poolside are simply incredible. Lokva Rogoznica is a small village 10 minutes from Omiš and our favourite part of the Dalmatian coastline by far. The Villa itself is stunning and equipped with everything we needed across three levels as a family of 10. Our host Karlo and his family made us feel so welcome and provided us with local knowledge and some of the best meals we had in Croatia at their family run restaurant the Berekin.
Sveti Filip i Jakov
A beautiful apartment on a perfect location on the Dalmatian coast. Beach for swimming and sun bathing right in front of the house. We swam almost everyday. Also a quiet place, just far enough out of the village centre, but also very close to the shops, restaurants and bars. Also a good place to discover interesting cities and parks of Croatia (coastal road behind the house, highway very near). Beautiful view from the upper balcony. We always ate outside.
Exceptional views of the Dalmatian coast. Staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful (arranged taxi back to airport for us) Food was tasty and we dined on the terrace enjoying the views. The hotel is a 5 minute walk down to the water taxi which takes you up the coast to Trogir island. You can also book other boat trips/hire boats from this location. Great place to base yourself to explore this area of Croatia-beautiful country !
Kastel Luksic, Kaštela
The host family went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Ivana made us a traditional Dalmatian style breakfast each morning. She is a superb chef and a most gracious hostess. We will definitely book again, each time we visit Croatia. Exceptionally clean, close proximity to the beach, old historic area and great restaurants and cafes are within walking distance. Secured spot to park car, easy access in and out.
Stayed one night only on our way back to the USA after staying with family. The highlight was visiting and eating at the nearby Dalmatian Village. My family is from an "actual" Dalmatian Village and it was spot on. Loved being pampered and wish we would have stayed longer. The hotel ordered a taxi to visit the city center and the conversion from dollars to Kune at the hotel was seamless.
Gorgeous hotel right next to the beach. Has huge territory compared to others hotels in this area. Lovely spa, indoor and outdoor pools, fitness room. Very good breakfast and dinner was included, which is a huge bonus, the food was fantastic with a very good selection. Hotel helped with a smoot airport transfer. It is about 1:15 from Split airport. One of the best spots to stay on Dalmatia coast
Slano
We had a wonderful week at Villa D&D, where we were well looked after by Sylvia. The apartment provided everything we needed for a family holiday, with truly amazing views of the bay. Perfectly located to explore the Dalmatian coast as well as to visit Dubrovnik, and literally a few steps from the sun beds on the beach! We've fallen in love with Croatia!
Sukošan
Very nice apartment situated in a quiet area of Sukosan, not on the main street, wich is an advantage, but close to the interested area like beaches, Marina Dalmatia, restaurants and supermarkets. With separate entrance, the apartment is fully equiped with everything you need for a relaxing vacation, the furniture and the appliances are new and modern.
Mastrinka, Trogir
The apartment was small but very clean and nicely decorated. The host, Danjela, was very helpful and charming. They even washed our laundry for us!!! The view from the balcony was absolutely spectacular, looking across the bay to Trogir and the Dalmatian hills. We did not swim, but there is beach access very close to the apartment.
Privlaka
Everything was great, very kind host, clean and comfortable apartment, lot of beautiful beaches highly recommended for families with children close to the apartment (Privlaka sandy beach, Ninska Laguna, Zaton, Vir island beaches 5-10 minutes far). Nice venetian style, dalmatian spirit old towns in Nin and Zadar, superb restaurants.
Trogir
Good location in relation to beaches (10 min walk) in a vacation area where rentals are high. Good value. (Caveat: Some (not all) retirees may have difficulty negotiating the walk to the beach; like most Croatian rentals on the Dalmatian Riviera, the walk to the beach is downhill and the return is definitely uphill.)
Primošten
The apartment was huge. The views of the sea from the balcony are amazing. The owners were lovely people and very helpful. Parking was just around the corner. The old town, bars, restaurants, shops are all within easy walking distance. It was a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the Dalmatian coast.
Brodarica
A friendly and welcoming owner, fast response time. The kitchen was small, but functional. Had all the pans and pots I needed. As expected, for a three star apartment in Dalmatia, we didn't get any condiments in the kitchen. Not even paper towels. Fortunately, we came prepared :)
Personal was extremly helpful and kind, especially at the reception desk. The hotel was clean with local dalmatian cuisine literally on the beach. I would recommend this accomodation for families with children, as there is hotel pool, gaming room and other activities for children.
Seget Vranjica
This is literally the best place to stay in Dalmatia and Croatia in general. The breakfast, the service, the place, the people, you name it - everything can and should be rated 11/10. Thank you to all the people working in this villa, it was incredible!
Bibinje
nice apartment in the center of sukosan. everything was close to the apartment, beaches, shops, restaurants, airport, marina Dalmatia. nice owners, despite the misunderstanding with the dogs, they were able to solve the problem in a human way
Split
The host was just absolutely lovely and very helpful, she gave us real insider tips about the city and also how amazing is to have a Dalmatian in Dalmatia as your neighbour. The apartment is really lovely and well taken care of
