Funchal is an attractive city, fairly quiet and not too many tourists (I visited in April). Good for walking around. Not much night life. The municipal park and other gardens were beautiful. Santa Catarina Park is a great spot for a picnic, on a hillside overlooking the old town and out to sea. The Mercado dos Lavradores, a large fruit, vegetable and flower market, is worth a visit. If you are into gardens then the Monte Palace gardens are a must - a cable car takes you 2,000ft up the mountainside to beautiful terraced gardens with water birds and artwork and great views. For those who like sailing, I can recommend a trip on the Santa Maria de Colombo, a replica of Columbus's flagship for his historic discovery of the Americas in 1492.Guest review byRobertUnited Kingdom - Review score

Nice small village nearby 2 beaches with all the necessary shops (supermarkets) and several restaurants. Away from the buzzling city. 😄 But by car nearby some touristic hotspots like Santa Cruz, Funchal, Cristo Rei, Santana houses etc.Guest review byRitaNetherlands - Review score

We come here to enjoy the natural pools we were too tired upon arrival. But next morning was perfect, no crowds, peaceful. There are enough restaurants to choose from. Please be aware that some of them close their kitchens around 4pmGuest review byUrsulaUnited States - Review score
Santana is a perfect location to explore the north coast.
Santana is a perfect location to explore the north coast. Not far away from airport and capital, but still on the north. Two hiking starting points are nearby: Queimadas and Achada do Teixeira. Santana also has an only large supermarket on the whole north coast, so you can buy delicious food right there. No such option in Porto Moniz or Seixal.Guest review bySergeyNorway - Review score

Beautiful island
Beautiful island If you are driving in Funchal please make sure you have good directions. Google maps do not work right up in the neighborhoods in the hills. Rent mall car as roads are very narrow and windingGuest review byClaraThainCanada - Review score

Great local place.
Great local place. I am very glad I have not spend the time in Funchal. From here I could explore the whole island and had my peace in the evening but with vibrant Sunday as all the locals come to town for their coffee and markets.Guest review byPavolSlovakia - Review score

This location is simply out-of-this-world beautiful. I did a lot of driving around Madeira, 700km in a week, so I saw a lot of places. Sao Vicente is lush, green, mountainous and breathtaking. I'm definitely glad we stayed here.Guest review byJodieUnited Kingdom
