One of my new favorites here in Northern Thailand. Its just such a cool "hippy" type of town. Loved the fact that once the sun went down the vendors all came out and you can walk the streets and eat and shop until you drop. Some of the 'tourist' sights are really pushing it by calling them 'tourist sights'. Visiting a coffee shop and a farm really wasn't top on my list of must see's but they turned out to be kinda cool and as the town and the surronding area is fairly small they need something to fill up a day tour, even if it is only a few hundred baht. This is definitely a great place to recharge your batteries, relax a few days and get ready to head either further north or south to some of the other great places to see in the country. One of my favorite daytime activities was to walk through the surrounding fields to see the beautiful landscapes and watch people in their normal daily routines. Don't skip this place. Put Pai on the top of your list as a must see if you're in the north of the country.
Chiang Mai is one of the biggest city in Northern Thailand. There are dozen of temples to visit and some day trips to elephant camps or tea plantations nearby. Lot of markets, cafes and restaurants too serving great food and tea for very little money.
We liked the variety of tours and access to many different activities. Chiang Mai is both a destination and a jump off point for things in northern Thailand. There are markets and bazaars for shopping as well as access to other things like jewelry or art. This was my second time here and won't be my last!
Although not excessively touristy like chiang mai, so many of the tourist attractions in chiang rai give the impression of having been specifically created with the cash ready tourist in mind. White temple, Blue temple and Baandam 'Museum' whilst all being attractive and interesting, fit this description. So called 'tribal village' was really dismal, and not sure if the ethnic people I saw there actually lived there full time. I did'nt see any children there during my visit, which surely suggests this is not a 'real' village, as certainly in living villages they would b full of kids running around. In fact this so called tourist attraction is a complete rip-off, 300 baht entry fee, and then descent into a dingy setting where unhappy and impoverished ethnic women try desperately to persuade you to buy articles which they supposedly hand make themselves, but which are all available in Chiang Rai night market, and are mostly all machine made in China. I would not recommend this experience to anyone, and whilst I recognise that the ethnic peoples of northern Thailand do need help to survive and sustain their traditions, this is really not an authentic experience in any way, and I left quickly feeling I'd been conned and saddened that these people had been reduced to begging tourists to buy trinkets. If you want to get out of the town and enjoy cycling then Singha park is a nice trip. After travelling in Laos and visiting 'living' authentic villages and towns I found northern Thailand tired and very much the tourist trap. One day in Chiang Rai is long enough to take in its attractions.
Great location to explore Northern Thailand and the beautiful surrounding countryside whilst being a great venue for night markets. Excellent restaurants around the town with something for everyone.
Chiang Mai is a sleepy town in northern Thailand. What I looked most were the adventure trips we booked such as a hike and bike through the country side and the ziplining via Flight Jungle. Both were pricey but worth it.
My coworkers would talk a lot about how awesome the conference in Chiang Mai was, building up the hype. While in all honesty, Thailand was one of my last destinations on my mind, amongst my travels in Shanghai, Wuxi, Hong Kong, Macau, Chiang Mai, Nanjing, and Tokyo, I was thoroughly impresses by Chiang Mai. I was surprised by how beautiful it was, how much of a small-town feel it had despite it being northern Thailand's biggest city, how much it had to offer in terms of both local and Western cuisine, and so many other things. If you come to Thailand, be sure to come to Chiang Mai!
A busy but very friendly city providing a base to visit the spectacular rural area of northern Thailand. The Saturday and Sunday night markets were interesting and the street food was great.
Wonderful smaller town in northern Thailand showing the best of what this country has to offer. Definitely not for the younger party minded traveler but the seasoned traveler looking for an authentic experience
Nice atmosphere for a relaxing stay in Northern Thailand. Lots of good food and bars. Pretty touristy but recommend getting out on a bike or motorcycle to get more scenery. Was an excellent place to learn to ride a motorbike (my first time). Probably more scenic to stay a bit away from town but need transport. We hiked to a secluded waterfall and it was beautiful.
This must be one of the best places we've stayed at during our tour around northern Thailand. Ideally placed as a stopover if you're driving the Mae Hong Son loop as we were. Da and her husband are the most lovely hosts who will make you feel very very welcome. Our bungalow was quite new , modern, well built with a good shower and very comfortable bed. The room was exceptionally clean and fresh. Dinner was fantastic , so tasty with lots and lots of vegetables and very reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend a stay here.
Phayao
Naga Tara was the best hotel experience we had on our journey through Northern Thailand. We spent two nights in the villa. The location and garden right on the shore of the lake is just lovely. The rooms are spacious and clean. The owner seems to look after the resort very well. The staff is exceptionally friendly. We had a wonderful breakfast. I travel a lot and never write recommendations, but this time I really wanted to.
Pai
The host was amazing, so kind and friendly. She gave us lots of advice on what to do while in Pai as well as around northern Thailand for our travels. The location is quiet and peaceful but also really close to the town centre. Though breakfast options were limited as two vegans she made sure we had enough food every morning. Balcony has a hammock. We enjoyed our stay so much we extended it by 2 days.
Mae Hong Son
Fern resort was a highlight of our trip to Northern Thailand. They offered a free shuttle bus into Mae Hong Song in the evening for a walk about and dinner in a village restaurant. The hike into the neighboring nature reserve was amazing. Well worth doing. The buffet breakfast was a treat. The only 10 I am giving of our 3 week trip to South East Asia.
Pai
Location is a 5 minute stroll over a bamboo bridge into the walking street market. The owner is lovely, provided a modest breakfast and water dispenser throughout the day. Room was large, came with their own mosquito net, hammock, two outdoor chairs and bathroom with separated shower (a rarity in northern Thailand!).
Doi Saket
I loved the blend of Thai and japanese like style of the culture. Very peaceful and quiet environment with the utmost, professional, but kind and caring attitude and service from the owners that were so helpful in many ways. Simply an embodiment of a spirit of northern Thailand that treated me in a best possible way.
Really good family. More than a wonderful host. Great breakfast. Cute pets. The room is quite modern, but simple, and equipped with everything you would possibly need. I came for one night (exploring Northern Thailand) and it was the only place in which I extended my stay! Will definitely come back. Thank you 🙏
Pai
Probably one of the best hotels in Pai. Lovely quiet location with hill views and for some reason a kale farm in the garden. Have yet to find any privately owned high end establishments in northern Thailand which offer luxury in all areas, this place is no exception, but that’s not a reason not to stay.
Mae Hong Son
Staying at the Crossroads house and getting to know Pon over the bonfire and roasted sweet potatoes has been one of the highlights of my trip through northern Thailand. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful place to stay and kind people to share the experience with.
Pai
We stayed only for one night because we were traveling through northern Thailand by car. Hotel has good parking for cars. It's well kept inside and outside. Has shuttle to walking street and back to hotel, despite being only around 1 kilometer away. Staff is great.
Ban Non Na Yao
The hotels in this area are more expensive than in other zones in northern Thailand so finding a more budget friendly place was good. The room was better than the more expensive tents in the campsites around. The staff was really friendly and willing to help.
Lampang
What a sweet little spot on the river! Centrally located with adorable, comfortable rooms and beautiful grounds. The delightful breakfast was a huge bonus. Plus the cool vintage t-shirt shop in the front! Lampang is an absolute gem in Northern Thailand....
Pang Mapha
Cannot say enough how wonderful our stay with Philip and Gail was! The personal touch they provided made our honeymoon extra special, which I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a genuine stay in northern Thailand on the Mae Hong Song loop.
Chiang Dao
The location is great. Near national park/mountain. Very peaceful. Close to hot springs. Very attentive host. He organized a BBQ for is one night which was a great experience. One of hour highlights in Northern Thailand.
Mae Hong Son
Beautiful location and views from the room, really friendly and welcoming team, came with a mosquito net for the bed which is a first for my stays in Northern Thailand and very welcome! Highly recommend staying here!
This place is an absolute heaven and I cannot wait to visit again. I wish I could have extended my stay - Don't hesitate...Just book it and experience one of the best places to stay in Northern Thailand.
Lampang
This resort is ideal for a stop off when travelling through Northern Thailand. The setting among beautiful mature trees is full of character. Room and food simple but very pleasant and excellent value
Mae Hong Son
Like most of Northern Thailand, mattress was hard and uncomfortable. But the room was spacious, very clean and location is good. Guesthouse owner is friendly and helpful!
Hang Dong
Homely and welcoming, what a lovely spot on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. We recharged our old batteries and now feel ready to set off again traveling Northern Thailand.
Mae Chaem
One of our best stays in northern Thailand. Owners are so nice. Food is delicious and the vibe is Just great! The cottage is so cozy and has everything we needed.
