Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaBeautiful old hotel with lots of character and charm. Remote location, perfect to escape and slow down the pace a little. Cozy open fire, and comfy lounge area. Room was well equipped and clean. We had both dinner and breakfast in the hotel - and both were excellent. Great quality, good portion sizes and great selection available. We were pleased with our stay, staff were friendly and attentive. We would stay again.

United StatesWe booked this hotel thinking it was in or around the city of Lairg, it turned out to be over 20 mile north on a single track road. This was not the direction we had planned to go so ended up wasting travel time and mileage to get there. They also ran out of draft beer that night and didn't have bottled beer as a backup.
We arrive about 5PM and was able to get seated at the restaurant right away (the rest of the night was already booked) the meal and service was great. Its an older hotel but the room was okay, and a bit overpriced.

United KingdomThe place is a little run down. But don’t let that put you off. It’s a hotel full of character and full of brilliant staff.

We came years ago at the hôtel with friends and we had the very good surprise to find again this cosy and very tranditional hotel. You can enjoye drinking a glass in the lounge (almost private) while waiting for dinner. Wonderful hotel in his original state but very comfy. We recommand.

United Kingdom1) it was a bit pricey for what was on offer 2) the twin room was rather small and initially a bit chilly 3) the windowsill in our ensuite was dirty
1) the real fire and character of the old hotel 2) the food was pretty good (though the menu was a bit predictable) 3) friendly, helpful staff 4) it's a pretty intimate place so provides the opportunity to chat to other guests

The hotel was somewhat off our route along the NC500, but what a delightful discovery! Quiet and beautiful location. Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was delicious. I had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, and my husband had the full English. We'll definitely come again if we're in the area.

United KingdomWhat a lovely find. We veered off the NC500 route as there wasn’t any last minute places to stay. Altnaharra is a lovely comfortable and quirky hotel, with a very relaxing atmosphere, ran at this time single handed by a helpful and friendly chap. Breakfast was delicious. Would recommend an off the route stay here as there are plenty of walks around.

United StatesNothing to not like.
I loved the very comfy bed, the hot bath with great hot water, yay, and the lounges, and decor and food looks really good, and the perfect setting, near fields, next to a creek, and a stone bridge, with a gorgeous drive to get there from Tongue, only about 25 minutes inland from the NC500. Well worth the fun drive. I loved the staff; Henry was very warmly welcoming and Valentine stood in the entry doorway, to wave us off, My Assistance Dog, Tarkina, and I.

United KingdomThe service is really good, hospitality of staff is way above average. Food served in hotel is excellent, with quite a few choices. Room is clean and comfortable, also size is okay. Although it is located a bit far away from NC500 main route.

United KingdomNothing really , it needs a little tlc here and there but sometimes that's part of the charm !
The bedroom was nice , headboard a bit grubby, windows held open with a piece of wood but quality bed linen and the room was lovely and warm . Wardrobe creaked when you walked across the floor so no tip toeing to the loo in the middle of the night . Bathroom a little dated but generally clean and heaps of hot water . Fab! The gentleman on reception was very welcoming. He was warm , friendly and attentive. He served us drinks , dinner , breakfast and he'd probably have read us a bedtime story if requested (we didn't, that would be weird) . The food was adequate, it's Altnaharra at the end of the season , I wasn't expecting Gordon Ramsey!! If I was going to Altnaharra again then I'd stay at this place but it's a heck of a trek and I don't anticipate a return any time soon. This corner of the world is definitely worth a visit, it's stunning , truly amazing scenery and you could do a great deal worse than staying at this hotel .

United KingdomMiddle of Scottish High Land moor was not sure what to expect. Very isolated therefore absorbed in silence, the setting was wonderful. Staff is helpful, both dinner and breakfast menu had variety of food including expected local Scottish food and very nice. Aging building but comfortable room with shower and good bed.
