Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThere was nothing we could complain about at all
Our room was clean and comfortable. Only problem was the squeaky floor with every step we took, but considering the age of the building I suppose that can't be helped. We went for Sunday lunch and was very surprised as it was a 3 course meal.Extremely good value for money.

United KingdomI witnessed two separate guests, one of whom claimed her room had been broken into and another who said she had an item of her removed from her room, being spoken to by the assistant manager, Matthew, very rudely. Matthew needs to learn a little about customer service. The check out system is ridiculous. There was 3 reception staff who were extremely slow at checking people in.
The location is ideal and the views are lovely. Most of the hotel staff are lovely.

United KingdomThe exterior of the hotel was infested with seabirds, and as such, made a terrible racket and you were always at risk of droppings when walking around the outside. Meal times were very short in duration making them very busy as a result. extending by just half an hour would alleviate this somewhat.
The room I booked was a premium one overlooking the terrace and as such was quite spacious and the bed very comfortable. it was equipped with a spa bath which I made use of after a 10 mile walk along the Cleveland Way. The views to the sea and harbour were great.

United KingdomSome of the furniture was coming to the end of its life and a bit rickety.
Location was brilliant, you could get to the beach, castle and amusements on a very short walk. The room was expected for the price. The hotel is a little run down and will never be back to its Victorian glory days but it's just what we needed for our short trip. The room was a very good size and ideal for us with one double bed and two single beds for the kids.

United KingdomWe stayed in an Executive room which only has a tiny lift (only took 4 people) to take you to the room, this took ages due to the queue of people. The lift was seperate from the main lifts. We ended up walking down the stairs which was a bit if a mission with 3 children a pushchair and a suitcase. Check in was also a little lengthy, there was quite a large queue which they do warn when you book so potentially you could go later to avoid the wait. Also parking was a little stressful as initially everywhere was full however we parked near Matalan in the end which was only a 3 minute walk to the hotel. The bathroom looked like it had partially been modernised, the flood was modern vinyl but i think It would benefit from the bathroom suite being replaced.
We loved the location of the Grand, it was perfect for accessing the beach either by tram down the cliff or walking down the stairs / path. As we had the pushchair we used the accessible walk way through the gardens, down the cliff then the tram up. We paid to have a sea view which was well worth it in my opinion. The hotel is undergoing some modernisation. I wasn't expecting much due to the poor reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. The room was comfortable and the bonus was having a fridge in the room which was perfect for keeping milk and snacks for our toddler. I also was grateful for the teabags and milk sachets in reception which you could take to have a brew in your room (if you'd used up the ones which were left).

United KingdomSome little things like so few towels for two, one pair of slippers for two, lack of hangers in the bathroom, etc. can spoil the impression of the stay. The most disappointing was the poor operation of a small freezer that exhibited room temperature inside despite correct setting of the regulator.
The breakfast is standard. The menu presents no extras but, in general, it serves the purpose. And the quality of food is very good as well as the service. We like the location of the hotel which has the long and glorious history. The room is very clean, and the beddings are irreproachable.

The hotel looks stunning from the outside. The reception area also looks lovely and inviting. The staff are all pleasant and helpful.
