Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomA fire in the reception would have been welcoming. We were in an attic bedroom. Had to bend down to see the view and couldn't open the windows.

United StatesThe land surrounding the property is stunning! Great for a run, playing yard games or take a nice walk to nearby restaurants. Breakfast was great too and the social areas (bar, foyer with fire place, Africa room) are amazing to relax and have Happy Hour. And it’s as central as you can get on the Island (easy to get everywhere).

United KingdomVery expensive for what they offer. Poor/lack of service, we tried to contact them for a week before arriving, only to be informed on arrival that the hotel restaurant was closed “because the chef was stung by a wasp”. Restaurants in Islay get fully booked up in advance so it was very difficult to find alternatives. Also when we arrived the room hadn’t had any tea/coffee refreshed and we only had our room refreshed/bed made etc if we asked for it. The hotel runs on minimal staff although those that are there are friendly. It appears they don’t care much anymore as the hotel is for sale.
lovely looking and historical property, nicely decorated, quiet. Good breakfast (although quality of coffee could be a lot better).

United StatesWhat’s not to love?
The setting is stunning, particularly as you come up the drive and see this lovely, stately house and all the greenery around it. There were so many rabbits munching happily in the yard, the weather was misty, the sounds were peaceful, and I felt like I’d gone back in time into a favorite novel. The Head of House was kind and accommodating, the meals were TRULY EXCELLENT; we couldn’t have asked for anything more. Please consider Islay for your next stay on the island.

AustraliaThe accommodation is tired and a bit run down. Our room had some serious damp and the whole place has seen better days. For the amount we paid it was very poor compared to the rest of our accommodation.
The location is fantastic and the property looks amazing, until you get up close. The whole place looks tired and a bit unloved.

United Kingdomseems very under staffed, no maintenance person and it shows!!! Had a tasting menu which was so incredibly awful and just regurgitated breakfast. I honestly can’t even describe how horrible the food was. Also, the manager/chef never showed his face probably for good reason. we stayed 4 nights 2 of which nobody made our room up. the staff we saw were very friendly but the whole thing seems terribly mismanaged. I feel bad for the staff that are trying with limited resources. Hope this hotel sells to someone who cares about the house and it’s reputation. Please save your money and don’t stay here

United StatesExceptionally bad reception. In 22 years of traveling never had such a bad reception. When we arrived at the house at the requires booking in time there was literally no one there to receive us. we waited 55 minutes before someone arrived and received us. We were left with impressions of chaos and lack of organizing. Such a pity. It is a beautiful place with a fantastic location. Very comfortable room and bed. Shower drain were blocked partially and had semi flood in the bathroom.
The location and beautiful gardens and old house.

United StatesThe check in/out process was odd. There is no reception area and we didn’t see anyone for the first few minutes after arrival. When we were greeted, it was almost a surprise that we had a reservation to him. There are only a few rooms available at this time due to renovation that is ongoing so I would have expected to be greeted as a known guest. The checkout process was equally strange. I was told to make sure everything was paid in advance and leave the key on a table outside the office.
It’s a beautiful property and hotel. The rooms are spacious and clean. Dinner was excellent although it’s a set menu. the bar is intimate and well stocked.

United KingdomThe "tasting menu" dinner was a disgrace. There three courses of poorly cooked food. When presented with "bbq chicken" as a main, it was a chicken breast with some barbecue sauce and some bacon smeared over it. Dessert was a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a chocolate brownie. Breakfast did not have the usual choice of pastries or any cold meats etc. I cannot recommend this hotel which is charging 5 star prices and giving 2 star service. Bath robes were only supplied on request. The web site states that all rooms have a view. I have attached a photo of the view from my bedroom. Finally, our room was like a sauna w it both radiators full on. There was no regulator so they had to turn them off from downstairs. Sadly, this meant that we had no hot water the next morning. As we were packing we noticed the radiators had been turned on again and the hot water returned. No dinner is served on Sunday but they do not tell you this until you arrive. Overall, I cannot see this hotel lasting very much longer if it maintains these low standards.
The building is lovely.
