Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThere was nothing to dislike.
Breakfast, great food and wonderful to be able to talk to the other guests in a relaxed atmosphere around a shared table. Such a refreshing change from the "processing" of big chain hotels.

United KingdomMy son said that his shower was not very hot.
The hotel was close to a bus stop which was important for using public transport. The breakfast was very interesting. 8 of us sat together round a large table, which meant we met other guests. There were cereals, fruit, etc. The hot course was mainly fish or fish and eggs (kippers, herrings, smoked haddock with egg) - traditional Scottish breakfast. The hotel was a traditional older house.

New ZealandNot really a dislike… the property had all the necessities. They may not be as modern as other places, but everything worked, it was clean and comfortable.
The property was within good driving distance to all the places we wanted to visit. In hindsight it would have been easier to take the bus into Edinburgh. The bus stop is close on the main road. Our hosts were great. My sister and I enjoy banter and definitely got that at Rathan House. Breakfast was an experience. We thought it was great having the guests sit around the one table. It encouraged conversation with different people from all around the world, which is what travel is all about.

United KingdomWe wanted to stay just outside Edinburgh and this was perfect. A traditional B&B style accommodation with a down-to-earth and knowledgable host. We had to leave early so didn't take breakfast, but the arrival was straightforward and the room was very spacious and comfortable. Would recommend!

United KingdomDidn't find the owners welcoming. On arrival they weren't sure of the room that had been booked. Was then questioned if payment had been made, it had, they weren't convinced. Upon leaving, said goodbye, to then be asked again if we had paid. No query of if we'd enjoyed our stay/slept well. Don't think we were the desired clientele.
Lovely property with historic features. Heated blankets were a bonus.

United StatesEwan and Irene are such kind and generous hosts, sharing their lovely home that dates back to the mid 1800s. It was quiet and kept us comfortable in the cool nights. The gardens in back are beautiful and the dogs are gentle and sweet. I especially enjoyed the breakfasts, which have a Scottish influence.

United KingdomBreakfast was £9 per person, payable onsite. I have to say it was the most weird hotel breakfast i had in my life. The gent running the property was pleasant and friendly, but presented as very eccentric with a dry sense of humour, which was.. curious. Back to the food. 'Roulette Breakfast' is the best way to describe it, he brings out a selection of weird traditional dishes and hands them out randomly. They all had rose petals and marjoram stuck in. You might get quiche, a fishcake, salmon or an oat breaded herring, served with white vinegar. (Which i received... only he said it was vodka, not vinegar which uneccesarily freaked me out as i dont drink). The food was nice enough, but really, i think i would have been happier with an egg. I would stay again, but skip the breakfast. But then it was so strange it did give me a yarn to spin.
Situated in a beautiful house with lovely gardens. Our room was large with thoughtful extras, such as the usual tea coffee and biscuits and even a shoe polish kit! Beds were comfy with nice bedding. The room had a 'rural Scotland' feel decorwise. Everything worked, nothing broken. The bathroom was not pretty, but was functional. Free onsite parking.

ItalyWe could not leave our luggage at the house outside of check-in time, and you cannot choose breakfast time.
The house is beautiful and in a good location if you have a car. There were three extremely friendly dogs who enjoy playing with the guests. Breakfast is good and the landlord told us a lot of useful historical facts.

United KingdomOnly thing I didn’t like was breakfast time as there were two of us and we couldn’t take my dog in (food possessive) and it did look and sound fantastic but there is a Morrisons 5 minutes up the road so we just got some pastries.
I booked here because I had to take my dog to The Veterinary School for a 4 week treatment. My friend drove us there and we had a twin room. They were very welcoming. Ewan the host was fantastic! They had an amazing garden where you dog is safe just to go out. My dog played with their dogs. It was lovely! The rooms were clean and lots of information available. Ewan has a wealth of knowledge. However - I left my wallet in the room and didn’t realise until after check out. Luckily we weren’t too far away and we went back around 2 hours later. I was frantic. They let us back in the room to search as the cleaner didn’t find nothing. My friend eventually found it under the wardrobes. My Labradors tail must have knocked it under. They wished us all the best with my dogs treatment. I had lots of chats outside with them. They are dog lovers!!!!

United KingdomWe didn't realise breakfast meant a 3 course parlour breakfast so a bit more explanation of this when checking in and a chance to say upfront what we wanted would have saved good food being wasted.
Competitive price for stay. Good local restaurants and a bus stop right outside the house with regular cheap buses into Edinburgh. Very generous breakfast.Friendly dogs.
