Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesI thought we could look inside the castle - but privately owned. They offer breakfast but not on Tuesday
Everything - our receptionist was kind and helped us. They left us bed linens and towels, as we could not travel with that. Very nice and I would stay there again.

CanadaI was very disappointed that I had to pay extra (a lot extra) for sheets on the beds and for towels. For the overall price to stay one night, I highly recommend that these items be included.
The Hosts at the reception were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

NetherlandsNo bed linen and towels, no shampoo, gel, even soap is not available. The place has a coffee machine, but no coffee/tea. The brasserie is also closed in the evening. Some rooms are without heating. The bedrooms and the bathroom are upstairs, while the toilet is downstairs near the front door and very cold!
Beautiful surrounding, free parking, the hotel is 20 min walking from the center of Valkenburg

United KingdomThe stairs were very steep and the bedrooms rather small as they were in the roof. The kettle lead trailed across the hob. We did not notice that we had to pay extra for bed linen and towels until the owners notified us. This was the only place out of the ten on our tour where we had to pay extra or take our own. (We took microfibre towels for ease of packing but hired the bed linen.)
The grounds and the view of the castle were lovely. The downstairs open plan kitchen/diner/lounge was comfortable. The building was obviously old (1738) with very thick walls. There was an outside dining area between the building and the moat. We would have liked to stay for longer to explore the area.

NetherlandsThe room was outdated, though the updated bathroom initially gave a positive impression. Unfortunately, the absence of a window made it stuffy and slightly moldy, with the fan not functioning well enough to improve the air quality. While it seemed clean at first, closer inspection revealed blood marks from mosquitoes on the ceiling, a few spiders, and odd stains on the sheets. The carpet also raised concerns about how well the room is cleaned between guests. The place seemed understaffed, with just one friendly lady managing everything. This led to delays during checkout and with service. Despite her efforts, it was clear she had too much to handle on her own. Overall, a little overpriced in our opinion.
The location offers a perfect blend of nature and proximity to the city - close enough for convenience, yet far enough to feel peaceful. It's quiet after hours, providing a serene atmosphere. The bed was comfortable and additional pillows were included. In the morning, it's a delightful experience to enjoy a coffee at the nearby restaurant.

CanadaThe shower head in the bathroom was curiously connected to the ceiling. I agree that bed linens and towels should be provided. This is new to us this visit but we experienced this at Europaarcs also so we were prepared. I think it it simply because they don’t have a large enough laundry on site. However, this is something I believe they should message you in advance and should also be highlighted on booking.com
I’ve visited this place many times as my mum used to live in a town nearby. I’ve always loved this place and thought it would be cool to stay in a building that’s hundreds of years old. The grounds are stunning. The beds are comfortable. Sure people have said in their reviews that the rooms need an update but that would take away from the character of the building. Stairs are narrow and noisy; you’re in Europe, that’s what you get! I loved staying here. The windows alone are super cute and the exposed beams in the ceiling look great. All part of the building’s charm. Love it

NetherlandsYou have to pay extra for bed sheets to make the beds (in the case you get the apartments). They let you know about it in the apartment description. But this really adds up to the final price. Be aware of it.
Location is perfect with a very pleasant walk around the area.

AustraliaJust after Easter, the restaurant closed early or didn’t open at all on some days. So you have to go to Valkenburg, which may be just too far to walk for an evening meal. Small windows - not a problem when we stayed. The outdoor area in the front will be lovely when the weather is nice.
Not the Castle, but a lovely old barn conversion building. Beautiful surroundings. Ducks! Comfortable rooms upstairs, plenty of living space downstairs. Kitchen facilities were good.

United KingdomWe got a surprise when we were told that there would be an extra fee for bed linen and towels. It seems that Dutch folk take these with them on holiday to keep the price down, but we were unaware of this, and by then it was too late to go elsewhere. Shame. Then we were pointed towards our room which happened to be a whole house - actually a number of small rooms upstairs and a kitchen and toilet on the ground floor. The bed was all you could get in the main bedroom. There was an air of mediaeval authenticity about the place, which made us feel we were staying somewhere special, but we're a bit old for that to be honest. Descending the creaking staircase to go to the toilet in the middle of the night isn't all it is cracked up to be either - at least it wasn't an outside toilet.
The first thing to say is that this is a stunning area to stay in. The adjacent castle is wonderful to look at, and the surroundings are splendid to walk around. Valkenburg itself is worth a number of days to explore. We would probably go back.

NetherlandsBe aware of tight parking space on busy days. The area around the castle is a hot-spot for tourists. If you're a cyclist, make sure your are ready for the steep hills of South-Limburg.
Fantastic location at the foot of the Schaloen castle, in the midst of beautiful rural scenery. Great location for walking and cycling. Lots of space to sit outside. Friendly staff. There is a restaurant available on site which can also serve breakfast if you want. Also comes with a beautiful garden right next to to castle at the water mill.
