Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumAs much as I loved the hotel, I doubt I would stay there again because of the hardships to reach it. From Ponta do Sol, our GPS took us through shortcuts, which were a nightmare: narrow steep 2-way streets, where often one has to back up or move to the side so another car passes. Three days later, I tried the main road, which was better, but still has many curves and cars parked everywhere. It is exhausting! I wonder why I didn't see this on the comments. There is nothing around the hotel, so one has to drive to go eat somewhere. The neighbourhood itself is not that nice either.
This boutique hotel is a gorgeous mannor. The floors, the colours, the sitting room especially are lovely. We had a junior suite with a balcony and view over the ocean and the garden, large and comfortable. Breakfast is excellent, with many warm options, as well as sweet pastries. One day there are fried eggs, the following scrambled, the next hard boiled, so it varies all the time. The personnel was lovely! Very eager to help at all times. We travelled with a small dog, and we were not charged extra. If everyone parks properly, five cars fit in the parking lot. The views are stunning!

NetherlandsThe bathroom was a little outdated and (just as a warning) the location is further away from the village than we thought when we looked at the map. You’ll need a car.
Beautiful view, breakfast was awesome and… THE CATS!! The villa had a lot of charm. The place is on a hill top. When you follow the signs from the village, as is recommended by the hotel, it’s easy to find and the roads are not as steep compared to those suggested by Google Maps.

RomaniaWhen we made the check-in our room smelled of chlorine, probably from the cleaning products used
The house is a coquettish one, beautifully decorated. Our room was clean and the lady from the housekeeping came every day to arrange the room. The view was very beautiful, directly towards the ocean. The breakfast was excellent, with many options, especially in terms of dessert PS: The cat from the picture is Garfield, which will welcome you immediately, so you can pet him 🫠

United StatesVery hard to get to property. You need a GPS. Winding, mountainous roads. Small car park area. I preferred parking on road with other locals. Easier.
Extremely quiet. Gorgeous property. Common rooms were very luxurious and beautifully furnished. 😍 BEST farm to table buffet breakfast with tons of choices. Room was simple but well equipped. Tea kettle and very small fridge on tabletop. Huge bathroom. Honor bar in common rooms. Pour your own and sign a log. Beautifully presented.

RomaniaI liked all, but just to say that one needs a car to access this place (which is anyways recommendable for Madeira island).
The villa is a great place overlooking the valley, wonderful landscape. Breakfast was great with fresh fruits and vegetables. 3 very cute cats in the garden.

United StatesTo warn other American travelers who aren't used to driving on steep or narrow streets- come up to the hotel from the west side of the valley instead of the east! The slopes are a bit easier to manage, especially in an unfamiliar manual rental car. Parking is also easier on the street that dead-ends into the hotel.
Villa Alta was an immersive experience perfect for our adventure to Madeira. The building was beautiful and the layout contributed to a sense of comradery with staff and other guests. The garden was great and we made friends with the cats that live outside.

United KingdomWe loved the place, beautiful location to wake up to. Our balcony was looking at the town below and the ocean in the background, very calming scenery. Definitely worth getting a car to get to the hotel and to travel around Madeira in general. The staff were extremely lovely and our favourite members were Pedrito and his brother (the cats that live there). It is the perfect place to disconnect and be in a very quite area after a good day of hiking. Definitely recommend villa alto, we had a beautiful stay.

SwedenThe location is unfortunate if you don't have a car. The breakfast is pretty poor. Wi-Fi is only in the hall, but it wasn't a problem for us, since we mostly used 5G. The TV has a smart function, but without the Internet it loses the point of being in the room. The pool is not heated, the jacuzzi didn't work when we lived there. I recommend closing the windows in the evening, since cockroaches can fly in.
A wonderful place for a relax. Architecture, interior, design details. Staff - 5/5 points. And 3 cutest cats - personal 5 points, with them i had feeling so I was home ❤️

ItalyThe wifi is not available in the rooms. Only common area. Parking is cramped but available for free on the street. The room was rather small but the view was incredible.
The place is amazing! Beautiful setting. A traditional building with great attention to details both indoor and in the garden. Lovely sitting rooms. The best breakfast... and breakfast room!!! The staff went above and beyond to accommodate special requests.

ItalyAs said before, rooms are a bit outdated, and the place is in the middle of the high hills, far from everything reacheable by foot. This last point is not negative per se, for us was ok, but some not well informed guests might find this as a negative point.
The structure is a refurbished old villa high on the hills. Rooms are clean (even if a bit outdated). The biggest added value is the included dinner restaurant: two main choices (meat or fish), which vary every evening... every time very well cooked, tasty and abundant, for a very reasonable price.

GermanyNice view, a comfortable, spacious room (No. 1)and delicious breakfast:) we loved the variety of fresh fruits and self-made cakes for breakfast! Everyone was really friendly and helpful. The idea of the honest bar is cool. And the interior of the hotel is just so cozy and well-thought. Simply a place for comfortable relaxing :) The drive uphill to the hotel was a bit tricky at first, but we managed it 😄. It was the perfect place to start our honeymoon. We can highly recommend the hotel!

SlovakiaRoom, staff, atmosphere. We loved it all. It totally matched the photos of the listing we booked. I can calmly say it exceeded our expectations. The location is so quiet and chill, that we finally had time to slow down. Also the cook prepared us the best poncha we had in Madeira. Absolutely recommend.

United KingdomThe dinners at the hotel were tasty and fresh, but felt quite pricey for what you got - €13 for one fairly basic pasta dish.
The hotel is a stunning old house, really well decorated and maintained in a nice secluded area. Our room was spacious and comfy with en suite, breakfast buffet is ridiculously good. Our room also had a huge balcony that was lovely with views down to the sea.
