Cambodia has successfully dusted itself off from the ravages of war with its colourful capital of Phnom Penh rising from the ashes and sparkling once more. This fascinating city, on the banks of the Mekong River, features exotic markets, cultural jewels and is home to some of the friendliest people on earth.
A visit to the National Museum captures a slice of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer history and art. A different and more recent history suffocates and overwhelms visitors to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former prison of the Khmer Rouge, and The Killing Fields are a short drive from the capital.
The Royal Palace is a striking centrepiece in the centre of Phnom Penh, and is home to the Emerald Buddha and Silver Pagoda. Not far away is the Cambodian Independence Monument that celebrates Cambodia’s sovereignty.
You can satisfy your hunger pains with delicious French-Indochina-inspired meals at various street stalls or classy restaurants. The riverside area has the Art Deco Central Market for a great bargain and there are a variety of bars, especially near Sisowath Quay.

Tuk tuk carried my friend and myself on some quite long trips. Also handy for getting about in the city. Staff at the front desk will hire a reliable driver. A taxi is the other alternative. Hotel staff will explain to the driver where you want to go.

MY biggest surprise was the quantity of plastics thrown into fields and drains out of town. Little wonder that the sea is becoming polluted! We really enjoyed our trip to Phnom Penh, we traveled as a family of 6 and had a wonderful local tuk-tuk driver that managed to fit us all in lol that was truly an experience!! He took us to many places and we were able to experience Phnom Penh in a way we didn't expect which was amazing. We stayed at the Peninsula Phnom Penh which was great value for money and a beautiful place to come back to at the end of the day. The rooftop pool was fantastic and live music was a wonderful bonus.

We are birders and saw hornbills, fantails, and barbets there which was amazing as this was our first day in Cambodia. The pool is fabulous, the restaurant is very good, and the room as spacious and comfortable. I highly recommend!
