With Norman cellars dating back to the 12th century and secret passageways in some of its rooms, this inn offers historic accommodation in Rye.

We had the most amazing stay at the Mermaid Inn. The place itself is absolutely beautiful and crammed full of history; the staff were excellent all round - its incredibly well run; the room was beautiful; but the highlight for us was the food - we had a delicious meal which took us totally by surprise - little delights kept arriving and every course seemed to offer new exquisite tastes until we had had 7 courses without even realising it. Superb.
The Lookout Rye is in the centre of the historical town of Rye, high on the East Cliff with views across the river. It has free Wi-Fi and paid parking.

Location really convenient for a local wedding, and the surrounding village seems pleasant. Parking was fine, although we couldn't find the electric charger which was advised.
Situated in the historic town of Rye, The River Haven Hotel is on the Strand Quay overlooking the River Tillingham. Rye Rail Station is a leisurely 10-minute walk away.

A charming and most agreeable town, with beautiful cobbled streets in the old part and a good selection of independent shops in the other part. The view from the top of the church tower is most sublime, a visit to Lamb House and the Castle is a must. The best time to see the quaint part of Rye, such as Watchbell Street and Mermaid Street, is in the early evening. Pubs worth a visit include The Mermaid Inn, The Old Bell, The Ypres Inn and The Waterworks Micropub. I can also recommend the Strand Fish & Chips shop. Further away is the Romney, Hythe and Dimchurch railway, accessible by bus from Rye and well worth a visit. The nearby town of Winchelsea is beautiful, served by an hourly bus and train service. In the St Thomas's Churchyard, one can find the grave of comedy legend Terence “Spike” Milligan. Rye Harbour is worth a look, again, served by a regular bus. The William the Conqueror pub is charming. Also take a moment to visit the R.N.L.I. shop at the Lifeboat station. If you are a vinyl record or CD collector, Grammar School Records on The High Street is well worth popping into, the owner knows his stuff!

Not necessarily a place I would stay overnight in the future to spend any length of time but as a breaking point between other place perhaps; which is what we did. The town is charming and provides a number of good eating and shopping locations. The locals seemed friendly.

Rye Castle was the most intact castle I've visited and small enough to explore in less than an hour. The huge ones like Bodiam are impressive, while Rye Castle was more managable for us seniors. It had a full armor, a real gibbit, a museum, battlements, the works - and not more than my knees could handle.
The cobble streets are amazing but not for those with poor balance. Luckily, most streets are paved. A great small bookstore!

RYE is the most amazing town I have ever visited.
RYE is the most amazing town I have ever visited. So much history, so many really old buildings, each one with so much history behind them. It is a very compact little town and I could walk around it despite my painful hip. Cute little tea rooms, interesting pubs, great restaurants. At night it comes more alive with all the restaurants open. Fantastic views from Ypres Tower and various viewpoints. Narrow tidal river. Slightly further afield is Rye Harbour and Marsh nature walks. Ships sailed right up to Rye up until the 1200s but then receded to 2 miles away. 5 miles away is Winchelsea, with its grid pattern road layout and magnificent church where Spike Milligan is buried. Highly recommend a visit to Rye, read up about it first or watch all the UTube visitor programmes.

Lovely village lots to do in and around Rye.
Lovely village lots to do in and around Rye. We wish we could have stayed much longer. It was so nice and had a lot of personality we could have stayed much longer if we could. We will come back soon and we loved the village of Battle, the Rye Heritage Centre, The Battle of Hastings Museum
The location is superb, right on the high street in Rye. It’s an old bakehouse with rooms, so not a hotel, you have your own key to get in/out, after 4pm. The staff were very pleasant and the breakfast is incredible, but you can choose to use your credit for lunch if you prefer. Our room was at the top of the house and the entrance to it was interesting, a little claustrophobic. The room is very trendy and had a free standing bath, then a separate toilet/washhand basin, also a sort of separate lounge area.
Its antiquity. An ancient hostelry dating back to the 1100s (‘re-built’ in the 1400s!) beautifully furnished and well maintained, with excellent food and service. My en-suite single room even had a four-poster bed. The Mermaid is on one of Rye’s old cobbled streets and is an ideal centre for exploring the town. The hotel has a very good website with videos and detailed information about every room, including the secret passages and ghosts!
In a good spot in Rye. Not so easy to access by car, but most of the old town is like that, and after 6pm you can park close to the hotel. Quiet overnight. The room was comfortable if a bit tired. Breakfast was fine - quite small portions but cooked fresh. Pleasant outdoor tables to have a drink in the evening were a plus.
The room was small but ok for the one night we had booked, bed very comfortable and bathroom satisfactory. Nice addition to have a happy hour in the bar…..two large Malbec for £9, bargain! Breakfast was good…although the coffee not so great. Overall, happy with the amount paid for a stay in Rye compared to other hotels
