Very pleasant provincial town, extremely few foreign tourists. English language is not really spoken in restaurants or touristic sights, and make sure to have cash with you for museums, especially the Monument and the Fortress on the hill - they do not take card payments.

Shumen is a very nice place for tourist visits.
Shumen is a very nice place for tourist visits. It has a lot of sites (museums, fortresses), and along the main pedestrian zone offers a lot of places with food and coffee. In close proximity to the town are located the historical Bulgarian capitals of Pliska and Preslav, as well as the Madara Rider UNESCO site. A landmark of the town is the gigantic monument, dedicated to the Founding of the Bulgarian State.

Very interesting if you like learning about the history of the country you're travelling. Most sights are not in the city centre - for example you have to walk over an hour to the fortress through a park and the forest - so that's a nice little hike, too. Extremely recommended: the Madara Archeological Preserve. Madara is only a couple of train stops from Shumen.

Bulgaria has very old history. We went to see The Shumen fortress.
Close to the town of Shument is The Madara's horseman, which is from Thracian times. Also we went to see two of the oldest capitals on Bulgaria Pliska and Preslav.
You can see a lot around Shumen if you search historical sights what is close by.

I am from Bulgaria and I never think of Shumen as something worth visiting, but boy I was so wrong. I recently started visiting the city for work and I am starting to discover how incredible it is. There is the Shumen plateau Nature park with old beech forests, endless trails, rocks, and views. You can hike, ride a bike, run or go with the car. There is the mighty ridiculous communist monument, which is a nice place to visit. There are museums, restaurants and so on. There is a fortress, a cave, and several rock churches. I wish I didn't have to work so I can explore more. Definitely a place for a full weekend.

Small quiet town, still with a pretty big walking area, restaurant gardens, parks and monuments (old citadel, Bulgarian Founders monument), history museum and more. More interesting touristic places around city, easy to be reached by car. For runners, could be a challenge to run from the city center to the Founders monument, in the top of the hill ... :)

The location of the hotel is perfect. The hotel provides you with a useful map of Shumen.
The breakfast is correct and solid. Someone told me it is a typical breakfast of commie times. :D The garden location for the breakfast is very nice.
It is a small hotel and I didn’t need to take 23 lifts or stairs to get to my room.
My room was pretty clean.
The staff was ready to help, the communication very to the point.
Good breakfast, comfortable bed, TV with several English channels. Parking was available although as there was a function on when I arrived this was a little limited, but fine later on. Hotel well-located for main town and some historical sites.
I was here for the second time. Thus I knew the hotel and fortunately nothing has changed to the worse. Friendly staff, excellent WiFi. A real bonus is the free-of-charge garage (with charging station, already!)
