What I like about Rome is that you do not have to go to the major tourist sites to experience the history of the city. There are many places to go that are off the beaten path that have their own charm and history. A good tip is to go to Rome around the 2nd week of January to get some great deals on quality leather goods and clothing. Walking around the city is easy. Many places to eat, drink, etc. The history of the city is amazing, to think many of those ancient buildings were there since the time of Christ is mind blowing. We went to the Borghese museum, highly recommend, but get there early if you don't get tickets in advance. Briefly - Rome was overcrowded (due to new pope's election), unfortunately most (if not all) monuments were surrounded by construction walls which spoiled any good views on them. Rome is an exciting city with lots to see and do but unfortunately everyone knows that now so even in May it felt rather overcrowded at the popular attractions. The food on the other hand I can highly recommend. We haven’t had a bad meal so far in Rome. In fact it feels a bit like Japan in that you get the feeling that Italians would be too proud of their food culture to serve you something inferior.
