Sophisticated Angers sits by 3 rivers draining into the Loire, and the imposing walls and turrets of its 13th-century fortress are a complete contrast to the other Loire Valley castles. The former Plantaganet seat, the castle is surrounded by landscaped gardens and a smaller castle inside contains the medieval Apocalypse Tapestry.
More modern tapestries are in St John’s Hospital, one of the oldest in Europe, by St Aubin’s Tower which was once part of an abbey. Ronceray Abbey sits amid half-timbered buildings on a street which continues over Verdun Bridge to St Maurice Cathedral, whose twin spires tower over Angers. Pavement cafes on the square behind overlook Adam’s House.
The main square - Place du Ralliement – houses the Grand Theatre and restaurants and bars serving Anjou wine and locally distilled Cointreau. Shopping streets surround it and nearby are the Fine Art Museum and Logis Pincé classical museum.
The court building overlooks the elegant Jardin du Mail, while the Jardin des Plantes are the oldest botanical gardens in Angers. The Terra Botanica amusement park is on St Aubin Island, one of several within the rivers. St Nicholas Lake has been artificially created, as has Maine Lake where there is a watersports centre.

We went to see the football on Friday night which was a brilliant experience, congrats to SCO!
The city is charming with the station and many of the commercial buildings in the upper town (where we stayed) so you can wander through the narrow streets of the old town to the incredible castle and River Maine.
Irigo the public transport provider is efficient and great value for money. We did an extended bus trip out of the city to a village on the River Loire approximately 8km out of the city, idyllic.

Angers is a beautiful city with stunning architecture and castle. Lots of winding streets, cobblestones and history everywhere. With lots of street cafes, bars and restaurants, it’s difficult to get your steps in before stopping for a crepe, galette or pastry.
Vineyards are everywhere and the Anjou wines are a must.
With a thriving student population, nightlife is good and varied and public transport is well served with buses and trams.

Angers is a fascinating small city on the Loire.
Angers is a fascinating small city on the Loire. And they do a great thing.....which is to mark on the pavement with a blue line the route to all the major sights. Even with a map this was excellent and helped us find out way with far fewer wrong turns than normal! Every tourits city should think of doing this.

Beautiful city. So artistic.
Beautiful city. So artistic. Thrilling architecture with so much history. I loved it. Clean & tidy. Not happy with the misuse or bad driving of scooters & it seems, sadly, that even clean & tidy cities like Angers can’t or won’t solve the problem many homeless & mentally ill wandering the street.
Really nice place to stay, room had a small kitchenette (containing plates, bowls, cutlery, mugs, cups etc) and the lift was in good working order. Even though it is quite a central location it was nice and quiet. Breakfast was continental but very nice. Small supermarket a stones throw away. Very close to ice rink and town was a 5 - 10 minute walk, the chateau was on the other side of the town centre (15 minute walk) and is a must to see the tapestry and history of Angers. Everyone was really friendly.
We were American's traveling in France. We stayed for 2 nights while In Angers visiting family and it was perfect for us. It allowed us to have our own space and enjoy the hospitality of Hostellerie Bon Pasteur.
We usually stay in Airbnbs but find that we are always beset with step staircases. - it is uncomfortable for older people. We will stay here where there are elevators, good food and wonderful staff.
Disaster city. Not the fault of the hotel. The hotel is beautiful but booking.com did not make it clear that we will be staying on the annex (probably the servants quarters) and although the room was quaint and tiny, it was not what we were expecting. So disappointed. We chose this place to stay in the chateau not the stables. Buyer beware when you book with booking.com!
This is a great apartment right in the centre. The kitchen has everything you need. The coffee machine is great. The bed was comfy and the bathroom and shower were clean and well maintained. The free WiFi was very fast and reliable. The location is very convenient for the downtown of Angers
Beautiful interior design in the bedroom & hotel overall. The hotels location is superb, within 10mins walk to the restaurants in the city centre; tram line outside the door for further distance & private underground secure parking at Le Mail parking at reasonable prices €15.40 for 24hrs.
spotlessly clean third generation family owned hotel in the old style, very comfortable large room overlooking plaza in front of train station. secure parking available, great breakfast, very helpful staff, close to everything including good places to eat. highly recommended.
Excellent stay. We were in Angers for a night. The room was super clean and staff were very attentive. Breakfast has exactly whats needed. All products of quality.
I highly recommend staying at Logis Hôtel Marguerite d’Anjou if you ever visit Angers.
Perfect location a little over 5 minutes walk from Saint-Laud railway station. Thomas the manager greeted us and he was kind and caring throughout our two night stay. The hotel is peaceful has a tranquil and intimate vibe yet in the centre of Angers.
The hotel is simple but clean and well-equipped.
I had room 33, reasonably spacious room with a nice little balcony. Personnel were very friendly and professional. Well situated for Angers' main station and walking distance from the town centre.
Nice cottage (we were on the ground floor with terrace) in the depth of a garden (with hens, but beware the rooster if he is jealous!) not far from the centre of Angers. Parking on the street. Bathroom between the living room and bedroom.
Lovely room with comfortable bed and antique furniture. Charming hosts who both spoke English. Good breakfast served in a nicely furnished room. Close to city centre. Nearby underground car park (reasonable charge) at Parking du Mail
The hotel location is exceptional by the park and very quiet. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable and the garage in the hotel basement was a big plus. The staff very friendly and professional.
Beautifully decorated flat (we stayed in flat 3) right in the centre of Angers. Fantastic location and convenient to shops, cafes and bars as well as museums and a short walk to the castle.
