The location is perfect - so close to old town and the port! We spent most of our days wandering around the town and soaking everything in. We also spent an afternoon at the hotel's spa, which we were quite pleased with! The staff was excellent, and the massages were wonderful - it was a wonderfully relaxing afternoon.

Lots of restaurants to choose from, I would recommend you head to the Oldtown as the service and choice is better than the main street. Trams and transport network are fantastic. Took a tram from the airport only a few euro and clean. Be wary of pick pockets lots of them around.

Marseille is a cosmopolitan center; you will find there the history of a country (continent) in a nutshell, and the simmering traces of revolt are evident. On the other extreme, you can walk through a city of French grandeur, see the monuments, and stroll and shop on the significant and renovated quai. Been there now 2 times with 5 years in between, and the extremes only became more entrenched. To get a sense of the growing divide between the rich and the poor, consider a city tour of Marseille.

Montpellier is one of those rare cities that effortlessly blends youthful energy with centuries of history. From the moment you arrive, you're struck by its elegant architecture, sun-drenched squares and the lively buzz of its streets. The historic centre, with its winding medieval alleys and grand 17th-century mansions, is a joy to explore on foot. The Place de la Comédie is the beating heart of the city - always alive with street performers, cafés, and the gentle hum of conversation. Just a short walk away, the Promenade du Peyrou offers sweeping views and a peaceful spot to unwind. We were there during the Festival of Swing - a very lucky coincidence. Swinging Montpellier is a joyful celebration of jazz and swing dance that transforms the city into a lively stage each summer, drawing dancers, musicians and enthusiasts from across Europe. With open-air concerts, dance workshops and a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere, it’s a must-experience event for anyone who loves rhythm, energy and the magic of live performance.

Nice walk from our hotel ( Hotel Colbert ) towards the Palais de Papas. Try to avoid the main street and take the avenue to the right. Nicer shops and restaurants and not so busy. Try the casual cafe in the park next door to Hotel Colbert.

I went there specifically for the opera festival held every July. That's of a very high standard. The Theatre is modern and ugly. The city centre is absolutely hopeless for the car, narrow streets and no parking available at most times. There's a very nice part round the cathedral and Hotel de Ville. The famous Cours Mirabeau didn't do much for me. I took a chance on the weather in order to go to the festival but found the vicious heat difficult. Going there in the spring or late autumn would probably be much better for someone used to British weather.

Carcassonne was even better than I thought it would be.

Carcassonne was even better than I thought it would be. The citadel was fantastic- worth getting there early as it gets very crowded. I took a guided tour in English which was very good and interesting but you can go into the château and on the ramparts on your own. Lots of signs in English and easy to spend a couple of hours there. I also walked all the way around the citadel from le couvent and through a park and over the old bridge. À lot of walking but worth it to get a real feel for the place.
