The Bulgarian capital of Sofia is one of the oldest European cities and boasts a carefully preserved culture and history. Established by the Thracians, this country was under Ottoman rule for several years. Today, Sofia is a fusion of diverse cultures, traditions and customs.
Sofia narrates tales of the bygone days through its ornate buildings and structures. Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is said to be the most famous site in the city with its gold-plated central dome. The ancient building of Saint George Rotunda is a red brick church from the 300s that has withstood the test of time. During the Ottoman rule, this church was converted into a mosque and its magnificent frescoes had been painted over. If you can, stop at the Banya Bashi Mosque, built in the 16th century during Ottoman rule. The only functional mosque in Sofia and an exceptional architectural marvel, Banya Bashi Mosque was built over natural thermal spas and you can see steam rising from the nearby vents.
Flavourful and filling, Bulgarian cuisine is a classic example of the Eastern European food culture. One of the favourites of the country, Shopska Salata is a salad featuring Bulgarian white cheese and vegetables, and is found in every traditional restaurant in Sofia. If salad isn’t your thing, then try ordering Meshana skara, a grilled meat platter including meatballs, sausage, minced meat and pork steak. You can also cool down with a bowl of Tarator, a refreshing yogurt soup prepared with cucumbers, walnuts and Bulgarian yogurt.

Lovely city and we were blessed with great weather.

Lovely city and we were blessed with great weather. Having drove to Bucharest in Romania, it is clear that Sofia has a “small town” feel by comparison but that is not a criticism. We are experienced travelers and it seems apparent that the country is developing rapidly but requires some time to match standards in other EU countries. Biggest negative are the taxis, with local people repeatedly warning us to be careful. This needs to be addressed. Other than that we found a warm welcome everywhere we went. Food excellent! I believe that Sofia has wonderful potential for the future.

Sofia is a wonderful city to visit for a short time. Food is lovely and it is very easy to get around. It is not their tradition to split the bill at payment time. This is something I would have liked to have know prior to my first restaurant visit there.

Sofia is a great city to explore, with many museums within walking distance and hidden gems like small art galleries tucked away from the usual tourist paths. Wandering the charming side streets around the center, especially Solunska street, reveals a vibrant mix of shops and galleries worth visiting, even just to browse. While good restaurants are plentiful, it's best to check popular review sites for quality recommendations.

A real surprise, loved Sofia and it is perfect for a 2-day stay. The view from the Hotel Rila was simply amazing. Don't miss the following sights: Sveta Sophia church; Alexander Nevsky cathedral and the ancient remains at Serdica metro station. The city is great for strolling around, particularly along the main pedestrian areas of Vitosha Boulevard and also Graf Ignatief Street. Most of the sites are within walkable distance as the city is fairly compact, but using the metro is very cheap at 1.6 Lev per journey. That is all it costs to get from the airport to the city centre, a journey of 11 stops and around 30mins. Eating out, especially street food, is cheap and there's lots on offer, whether animal- or plant-based.

Sofia is a beautiful city with gorgeous architecture but you have to be prepared for the collapsing buildings and empty lots with rubbish. The pavements are also in bad shape so watch where you step. People are very friendly and speak good English. The city is very walkable and the public transport excellent and cheap. You just use your contactless card to pay for the ticket. So easy! Be sure to do the Free walking tour and Communist tour by the 365 company - these are excellent ways to get to know more about the city and its history. The guides are really knowledgeable and ready to answer all your questions. The Rila Monastery day trip with Boyana and a visit to St Ivan's cave is really worth it. Our tour company Traventuria did an excellent job. If it's a cold period, make sure you dress warmly, as the mountain is much colder than in Sofia. Hadjidraganov's Houses restaurant is an excellent place to get to know Bulgarian food. Never miss the Shopska salad! Make sure you visit the Socialist Art Museum, it's a short metro ride away. I absolutely adore Sofia, hope you enjoy it too!
