About Recife

Including tips for the best time to visit Recife

Also known as the 'Venice of Brazil', Recife – the capital of the state of Pernambuco on Brazil's northeastern coast – lives up to its nickname. The waterfront city is peppered with bridges spanning its many canals and inlets. Named for the offshore reefs that protect its shores, Recife is a mix of colourful heritage buildings and glassy skyscrapers – a booming centre for commerce and tourism.

It's impossible to ignore the allure of Recife's sun-drenched beaches. Thanks to an average year-round temperature of around 26 degrees Celsius, it's always beach season here. The sands of Boa Viagem are especially picturesque, not to mention spacious, and surrounded by upscale shops, restaurants and clubs.

Like many great cities in Brazil, Recife comes alive during carnival when colourful parades take over the streets. For a slightly different experience, skip the main spring celebration for the off-season Recifolia carnival held every October.

Take a stroll through Recife Antigo for a taste of history and local culture. Recife's historic centre is home to impressive examples of architecture, from the 19th-century Santa Isabel Theatre to the Co-Cathedral of Recife. At the Mercado de São José, covered stands sell seafood, spices and handicrafts. More local souvenirs can be found at the Casa da Cultura, a former prison turned cultural centre where you can shop, sample regional cuisine and learn about Brazilian music and dance.

Amazing historic centre (part repaired, part in state of ruin), a palace and arts centres so plenty to spend a day. With more time I would have headed out ot town to attractions 30-40 mins away. A bike tour was a good way to esplore the city. Recife combined with Olinda could be a 4 day trip

I loved the locals, the culture, the beach, and the homeless people I fed while I was there. I liked the old center, the city in general I liked Olinda, and old town nearby that I should recommend. I like the Assai Supermarket and the Shopping Rio Mar. The Outlet restaurant at the shopping. The people are tall, beautiful, nice artists. I loved Recife and Porto de Galinhas and Praia dos Carneiros where I bought a flat. I live in Brasília, but have many friends in Araçatuba, São Paulo, where I was born and raised. They will all be in my flat when it is ready in 3 years.

Recife used to be a beautiful city but crime and a bad economy made the city one of the less pleasant experience. Many shark attacks happen in two of the major beaches, Boa Viagem and Piedade. All the coast has sign alerting that swimming is not recommended. I don’t see a point of ever visiting this place again.

Big city vibes, but with some nice parks and green areas and also the river that give a bit of alternative scenery. Some nice small museums, the beaches are nothing special, ask locals to show you spots for the evening/night.

Recife is just not my cup of tea.

May 7, 2023

Recife is just not my cup of tea. I actually hate it. I only travel there for work. The city itself is chaotic. It stinks and is dirty everywhere - pollution is everywhere for you to see. Also, I hate its culture - people in the streets are mean and unpolite most of the time. It is a very unsafe city. I would never recommend anyone to visit it unless you are a Brazilian who is familiar with dangerous metropolis and know exactly where you're getting yourself into.
