About Roses

Including tips for the best time to visit Roses

The beauty of Roses, a coastal town on the Costa Brava in northeastern Spain with a scenic natural harbour, has been appreciated since as far back as the fifth century BCE when Ancient Greeks first settled here. Today, the area is home to plenty of historic monuments as well as established parks that showcase the region's natural splendour.

Among Roses' most popular attractions is the Ciutadella de Roses, a massive fortress that protected the city and its Greek, Roman and Visigothic ruins from pirates. The 16th-century Castell de la Trinitat is another historic military fortification whose hilltop position affords sweeping views of the bay. For even more history, check out Roses' numerous megalithic sites including La Creu d'en Cobertella – a prehistoric burial monument dating back to approximately 3000 BCE.

One of the best ways to take in the natural surroundings is on a hike from Roses through the Natural Park of Cap de Creus. The park's best trails trace the coastline and get close enough to the water for you to take a swim. At Cabo de Creus National Park, you can see where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean as well as beaches that inspired works by artist Salvador Dalí.

While exploring Roses, you're always within sight of the water. The town's restaurant-lined promenade is ideal for daily strolls and link the town's two ports. Nearby, you'll find La Punta, one of Roses' main beaches. The sands are well-equipped with loungers, facilities and pop-up stands selling cold treats.

13 May 2025

We have visted Roses in our motor cruiser when travelling along the coast from France down to Barcelona and we love it. Of course there are many ports along the route who are also very welcoming but Roses has a special place in our hearts as we had our honeymoon here. For us it was a chance to visit as land based tourists. To get the very best of your holiday we recommend that you do your homework in advance so that your holiday coincides with local events like the summer solstice which add vibrant colour to your holiday and you can make some lovely memories to cherish forever.

It is a lovely part of Spain.

It is a lovely part of Spain. Plenty of restaurants along the sea-front promenade. Everywhere is walkable. Lovely bay with view of mountains. Lovely sea - clear and clean and remains shallow for a good distance.

23 January 2025

January and February is VERY VERY quiet with most bars and restaurants closed for the season. Having said this, I would not want to visit in High Season. I would imagine the best time to visit is late Spring, or early Autumn.

Finally a hotel that was not the typical minimalist, sterile style but warm and cosy. Hope they don’t ‘wreckovate’ it. Loved the old world charm, the shutters which allowed for ventilation, the large trees around the building and the wood & terracotta tile decor. Also the pictures on the wall showing real surroundings of the local area.

7 August 2024

Roses is a real Spanish town - unlike some other resorts in the area - but in high season much of it is still dominated by tourists. Obviously this has advantages - lots of shopping opportunities, boat trips, restaurants, etc. And it doesn't take much to get away from the tourist centre and find things with a local feel, from the covered market to some classy tapas joints. Great for history too - the Cuitadela is fascinating (especially the Monastery), the Visigothic Fortress is a magical sunset spot, and although we didn't check out the megalithic trail it looked awesome!
