Padova is one of the oldest cities in northern Italy and has been a major cultural centre ever since the Middle Ages. You find the lion's share of the city's historical landmarks in its medieval centre. Step away from Padova's arcaded streets, however, and you'll discover a buzzing, industrial zone and dynamic student population crowded around cafés and public squares.
Padova's significance to Italian history began after the 1222 opening of Italy's second-oldest university, which welcomed students including Copernicus and Dante and teachers including Galileo and Petrarch. A decade later, St Anthony of Padua died in the city. The Basilica di Sant'Antonio was built to house his tomb and is still a pilgrimage site. Visit the church to see its many domed towers, frescoes and marble sculptures.
Padova's artistic attributes are few but mighty. Giotto, Donatello and Mantegna – three of Italy's great artists – all left works in Padova, including Giotto's colourful 14th-century frescoes that cover the interiors of Scrovegni Chapel. The Musei Civici offers a more traditional museum setting for taking in Venetian Renaissance art by masters including Titian, Bellini and Veronese.
Although Padova is predominantly industrial, there are a few picturesque corners to escape to. At 90,000 square metres, Prato della Valle is the largest square in Italy and features a circular water feature lined with statues and bridges. The city is also home to several canals similar to those you'd find in Venice, the 'City of Canals', less than an hour away.

We only stopped for 1 night on route from Venice to Florence.
3 April 2025
We only stopped for 1 night on route from Venice to Florence. Lots of churches to see if that’s your thing a lovely park area with the fountain and statues (Prato della Valle) and an ancient botanical garden that was interesting but not much else to see. There is a the Scrovegni Chapel that is supposed to be beautiful but we didn’t have time to visit. More of a university city with lots of young people.
What a terrific spot!

What a terrific spot! The town was lively, clean and had little gems all over the place. The Baptistery Giusto de' Menabuoi frescoes (next to the Duomo) were astounding. So to the frescos by Giotto in the Scrovegni Chapel (timed tickets needed). Great restaurants etc.

We stayed for six nights and there was still something to discover. It is a hidden gem, not to crowded with tourists who are all in Venice. The city has amazing history with famous artists and scientists.

Padova is indeed a fantastic choice as a central hub in the Veneto region! Its strategic location makes it easy to explore iconic destinations. The quick 30-minute train ride to Venice is a major plus for day trips to the canals and historic sites. Additionally, the proximity to Verona and Bologna provides excellent opportunities to experience even more of Italy's rich culture and history. The tram system in Padova is not only efficient but also eco-friendly, offering a smooth and reliable way to get around the city. As you noted, taxis can be quite expensive, so the tram is an excellent alternative for both residents and visitors. Whether you're heading to the Scrovegni Chapel, the University of Padova, or simply enjoying the vibrant local piazzas, the city offers a wonderful balance of accessibility and charm.
One of the most underrated cities in Italy.
27 November 2024
One of the most underrated cities in Italy. I have been three times in two years and it has great buildings and a buzzy feel. The Palazzo della Ragione is a world-class space and I would visit the tiny Enoteca Severino weekly if I lived there.
