About Nazaré

Including tips for the best time to visit Nazaré

Nazaré is a small seaside town located on Portugal’s Costa de Prata or Silver Coast. Once a sleepy fishing village, it is now a popular holiday destination and surfing spot.

Skirted by the Atlantic Ocean, the beaches in Nazaré form a narrow, crescent-shaped stretch of sand. Praia da Nazaré offers turquoise waters for swimming, a scenic promenade and plenty of beachside bars and restaurants. As you take in views of the looming Sítio headland, also keep an eye out for colourful fishing boats, nets laden with fish and locals dressed in the traditional garb of seven skirts. North of the cliff, Praia do Norte boasts massive breaking waves that hold multiple Guinness World Records for the largest waves ever surfed. These towering swells are formed by the underwater Nazaré Canyon and attract throngs of surfers in winter.

For breathtaking vistas of Nazaré, head to the Miradouro do Suberco viewpoint, located at the top of a cliff. You can reach the observation terrace by car, on foot or via a panoramic funicular. Then there’s the coastal 16th-century São Miguel Arcanjo Fort, where you’ll find the Farol da Nazaré lighthouse and a museum dedicated to the town’s surfing heritage.

Really well located as a base to visit other parts of Portugal within an hour or two of driving if you have your own car. Lovely restaurants great views and a funicular to get up the steep hill to look over Nazare. We loved this place would love to come back (but from Australia who knows!)

I loved the town.

March 10, 2025

I loved the town. Lots of international people, kind locals, gorgeous views and hike to the lighthouse. The ascensor was fun. Ate at a neat Italian restaurant, Bontà Bistro Italiano , very fresh and the owner was lovely. We stayed at By the sea. At one point the manager delivered a rose to me for National Day of Women. Very nice!

A really beautiful seaside town with a very local feel. We avoided peak season and the crowds so we could just enjoy the town without it being noisy and crowded. The weather was nice and comfortable and the views from the headland are amazing. So picturesque. Lots of nice restaurants and shops. Highly recommend a stay here.

It’s a great place for a break from the big cities. It’s easy to get there and get around without a car. Plenty of good eating places from ice cream, coffee and cake, Indian, pizza and more local dishes. There’s plenty of choices for shopping.

I love the beach and how they made it family friendly, clean.

September 25, 2024

I love the beach and how they made it family friendly, clean. It was one of the best beach towns I had been too. Love the restaurants all over, the little village up on the hill was even more charming or as great-as below. The people in that town were top notch. I hope it doesn’t loose that charm while a ton of people around the world discover it. Dont sell out to the Chinese developers. Your doing just fine.

Nazare is a lovely place to spend a few days.

Nazare is a lovely place to spend a few days. The beach is beautiful and the town is very friendly. We took the funicular up the hill, walked down the other side to the beach to watch the waves. Highest waves in the world during the winter! Overall a great stay for us and wished we had more days just to relax on the beach and enjoy the restaurants.
