Stari Grad
In the city centre
Rich in history and tradition, Stari Grad is the city’s old town. The ancient Kalemegdan Fortress is your first port of call. Ramble its ramparts and snap shots of the majestic River Danube below. Stop off at Café Svetskih Putnika to sample classic “ćevapi" minced meat. Then, peruse the craft shops off Republic Square for trinkets and jewellery.

Vračar
1.2 miles from city centre
Set high on Vračar plateau, this district has many levels. On one hand, historic sites like St Sava Temple and Karađorde Park ooze serenity. Yet, in bohemian Čubura the city’s best “kafana” bars pump out high-tempo dance music long into the night. At places like Mala Maca and Sumnjivog Morala, meaty snacks are served along with the shots. Tuck in!

Novi Beograd
3.1 miles from city centre
There’s more to “NB” than grey, functionalist tower blocks. Since the 2000s, the area's boomed as an entertainment emporium. Ušće Shopping Centre packs in punters with its stores, eateries and cinema screens. At Belgrade Arena, the biggest pop stars strut their stuff. Then there’s the riverboat nightclubs like Šlep that “oomph” long into the night.

Zemun
3.9 miles from city centre
Zemun was settled in the Neolithic Age. Once a free town, it merged with Belgrade in the 1930s. Wander the tree-lined banks of the Danube to feel the river’s might, and pause for a classic fish lunch at the quaint Restaurant Šaran. Then, climb the cobbled street that leads to Gardoš Tower, and capture panoramas of red rooftops and river bends.
Places to stay from € 15 per night
Belgrade, locally known as Beograd, offers a wealth of historical and cultural attractions to visitors. From museums to nightlife, the city is overflowing with things to do.
Heritage structures in Belgrade are a testament to how this city was shaped by major events in European history. This is especially evident at Belgrade Fortress – one of Serbia's most-visited attractions. This ancient landmark sits at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers and has been a strategically important conquest for several empires. Another prominent monument is the Temple of Saint Sava, which has an imposing white exterior and a beautiful golden interior. At the Nikola Tesla Museum nearby, you’ll find thousands of original drawings, photographs and instruments belonging to the eponymous inventor.
A night out in the capital of Serbia includes a trip to one of the many splavovi – boats and barges – anchored along the banks of the rivers. These floating clubs, bars and restaurants offer a variety of entertainment and music options ranging from Serbian folk to pop. You can go dancing, wining or dining at these splavovi and even hop from barge to barge in the peak of summer.
For some outdoor fun in Belgrade, head to Ada Ciganlija, a peninsula on the Sava River. You can try bungee jumping, water skiing and other exciting activities at this destination. Hiking and biking can be enjoyed at both Ada Ciganlija and Kalemegdan park. The latter also has several walking trails that offer scenic views of the surroundings.

Belgrade is one of the most interesting cities I have visited. On the outside, I think it has seen better days - there is graffiti everywhere, quite a bit of litter and some areas where the smell of sewage is present. But, for us, the good outweighs the less-than-good. People are really friendly and outgoing; nightlife is very good - people sitting in sidewalk cafes and strolling with family and friends; dogs are well-loved and are very well-behaved; free buses, trams and trolleys make getting around the city much easier and we didn’t have to figure out how to buy tickets - we just got on and rode until we wanted to get off; children seem happy and people, in general, are attractive; there are many parks and the trees are varied and beautiful; food is tasty.

Belgrade is a very charming and vibrant city with great food, friendly people, and lots of history. It’s perfect for a short visit—two nights felt just right to explore and enjoy the highlights. Staying longer might feel a bit repetitive unless you have specific plans or excursions.
