Set at the south-western tip of Y-shaped Lake Como, the town of Como offers wonderful views of the surrounding Alps. A funicular railway runs up to the village of Brunate from where you can see Switzerland on the opposite shore.
The peaceful location has long been a favourite with celebrities, but the town has been around since Roman times. In fact, 2 of its most famous sons – Pliny the Elder and Younger – are commemorated in statues on the façade of the 14th-century cathedral. The next door Broletto dates to the previous century, and even older are the remains of the medieval walls and Castello Baradello, sitting on a hill overlooking the town.
Much more modern in style is the Casa del Fascio, built during Mussolini’s rule. The streets between here and the waterfront are packed with shops, bars and restaurants, and Lake Como boat trips depart from the small marina.
The neighbouring park houses a temple-like museum about Alessandro Volta (another former resident), and around the shoreline is elegant Villa Olmo which looks across landscaped gardens to the water’s edge.
The Como accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury lakefront hotels, town centre B&Bs and cheap apartments near San Giovanni Train Station, which offers direct services to Milan.
Try not to travel in peak season. Sooo many tourists!
Try not to travel in peak season. Sooo many tourists!
Make sure you book ferry travel (for the lake) day before but be aware tickets are non refundable. Big cues at the ticket office...go early!!
Slow ferry outward bound is great with the fast ferry for return. Tickets are not inexpensive if travelling on a budget however well worth budgeting for! Como and the townships along the lake are beautiful!
Try to find places where the locals eat....in the back streets usually.
Como was our last stop after six weeks in Italy .... we were a little over visiting cathedrals etc however we really enjoyed site seeing and sitting in the local cafes people watching.

Lake Como was wonderful. Though we had rain for the three days we stayed, it was still lovely, and will return again, and stay at the
B&B Al Molo, Sant’Agostino. The owner, Stefano, was just wonderful.

Como city itself can be visited in a day, after that the best is to take the bus and visit the cities around the lake like Mennagio - from there, take the ferry (7€/person total) and go visit Bellagio and Varenna.
You can visit villas; such as Carlotta (just before Mennagio) or Olmo (in Como).
In total, a trip between 2 and 3 days (max) is perfect.

Beautiful scenery.
Beautiful scenery. Recommend taking a trip on the fernicular for the views and a meal / drinks in the Locanda Milano hotel while up there.
Plenty of restaurants & bars to choose from in the city. The eateries with a view of the Cathederal are obviously more expensive than others further afield but not necessarily any better fare.
I was expecting it to be eye wateringly expensive but was pleasantly surprised that it was comparable to London / Brighton prices.
Advise picking up a street map from tourist info as the narrow streets can look very similar!

Stunning location, recommend you get up early to get the first boat to other towns on the lake. You have no queues, similarly with the funicular. We got an early car up to Brunate. Came down at 1pm and the queue to go up stretched onto the street.
Easy to get to from Milan (1 hr train)
We travelled to Como to watch the football, so the hotel was perfectly located. it was also walking distance from the train
and ferry station, near the lake, and close to the square and good restaurants.
The staff were great and really helpful, and they allowed us to stay in our room after checkout, which was really helpful do us.
The breakfast was really nice.
The room was very clean, and the beds very comfortable. it was also great value for money.
We will definitely come back!!
Location, set back but very near the Lake in a great little Square of shops and Hotels.
It is also very convenient for the train station with buses.
The Breakfast choice was excellent and the staff were respectful.
The sheets on the Bed were very very clean and good quality.
I used this Hotel upon arrival in Como before going up the Lake for a 10 day stay and again on my return. It was a great stopover that made my journey pleasant and convenient.
Thank you to all the Staff
Although my days in Como was short, just only 2 nights, Stefano's place is the best experience to me during my days in Italy this summer.
Everything is perfect to me. The price is so good for everything you get from this place. The location is right at the lake, closed to everything in Como. Perfect room which is completely new facility, with daily cleaning service and the great hospitality from Stefano.
If I come back to Como, I am sure that I will come back here again!
Visited many places in Italy and stayed in many hotel/apartments. This was the best. Best Host in Italy so far.
Great 👍 location, Clean, spacious what not. Hope to stay here again whenever I come to this region. Como Giovanni, Ferry Station at walking distance. Many restaurants, shopping nearby. Extremely good behaviour and extreme consideration in many issues from the host. I am really grateful 🙏 to the host.
Thank you once again.
If you want to stay in a decent hotel with an affordable price around Lake Como, this is your place! If you are travelling with a car, I certainly recommend this hotel, since it offers free parking, which is not a common thing in Italy. The employees are super friendly and sincere. They prepared the room quite fast, given the fact that i wrote to them we would like to check-in a bit earlier then usual.
the entire stay was very comfortable and pleasant in a well furnished and decorated apartment. the view of Lake Como is spectacular! an outside seating area allows for both sun or shade and an incredible view. easy access to the lake community on a ferry is delightful and efficient. local restaurants, supermarket and pharmacy easy access. best host and staff we encountered on a six week Italy trip.
Best Plaza in town. The hotel truely is a hidden gem. it's boutique and very very cute, the rooms are cozy and the bed was paradise.
The owners are friendly and helpful.
The breakfast - for we are in Italy - was unexpectedly rich and you can sit in the Winter Garden overlooking the plaza in front seeing the neighbourhood waren up. I loved every Minute.
It was the first time I visited a hotel without any human contact, everything was automized. But it worked really well, so nothing to complain on that side. The room was really spatious and had everything you need. And the area is fantastic. You have a parking garage right behind the hotel and you´re directly at lake como, so this is definitely a plus.
Super hotel with a great view of the lake. Breakfast choices were extensive and pleasantly situated. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Well located to ride the funicular, explore the sites and choose from an array of bars and restaurants. Easy access from the train station as we toured around Northern Italy and Switzerland.
I am hesitate to write anything positive as I want this hotel all to MYSELF! Leave front door, Lake Como before you. Bathroom was enormous (walk in rain shower). Room quiet and large. Free amenities (water, wine, cookies, etc.) Nespresso coffee machine in room. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.
The staff went above and beyond to provide a full 5-star concierge experience. They held our bags at checkout, offered to bring them to the train station, and generally spoke with my friend and I with extreme patience and kindness. I highly recommend this hotel to anybody visiting Como on a budget!
Location was wonderful, walkable everywhere in Como. Just a short walk to the ferry and train station and restaurants. The hotel owner was incredibly kind and helpful. There is a small elevator which is nice for when you are moving luggage. The rooms are clean and it’s a good value.
The location couldn’t have been better. It was on the main square in front of Lake Como and the ferry terminal. Lots of restaurants and shopping in the immediate area. The hotel also upgraded my room when I arrived which I was happy about.
The Hotel is an authentic building in the middle of the town. It is nice and located by the main square of Como with a lovely teras where you can have food and coffee. And you can reach the corso of the lake in a few seconds by walk.
One of our best hotel stays ever. Stunning views of Lake Como from our room, outstanding staff and service. A truly wonderful experience. Looking forward to our next stay there!
Location is near the train station Como and within walking distance to pier, market and restaurant.
No frill little hotel but quiet. Staff are very kind and helpful.
Loved this hotel! The staff is SUPER nice and the room was very clean. It is situated very close to the lake of como, a 5 minute walk. Definetly recommend it :)
