Ask if you can feed the wild chickens or if you can be taught how to open a coconut. Every evening the host and his neighbors would have a drink to close out the night in a common area - they will invite you to join. They are excited to meet new people and share their culture. Although this shouldn’t be an expectation during your stay - they were kind to offer drinks, food, and transportation. It’s not a resort, but a true authentic experience of what life is like on Christmas Island.

Papaya Cottage located in Settlement, 100 metres from the Indian Ocean and 50 metres from the Christmas Island National Park. unique, light & air, plenty of space, seperate comfortable places to relax, the outdoor bath/ shower was amazing.

Hibiscus is a lovely old house in the Settlement area. It has all the facilities for a long stay (we were there a week). It has a good verandah for outside eating. It is in a quiet area. All windows had mozzie nets :)

The property exceeded expectations, the photos online don't do it justice! The bathroom was newly renovated, there was complementary bread and milk in the fridge, and in an island with limited mobile reception, the unlimited WiFi (up to 30 mbps download speed) was amazing! It let me do what I needed to do online for work after collecting data in the field, plus the complementary smart TV service (such as Netflix and Disney) was also very nice and was made possible by the WiFi. The hosts are also very responsive, friendly, and informative, it was a very wonderful stay overall! Highly recommend!
