The modern Holiday Inn Rochester-Chatham hotel has fully air-conditioned bedrooms, a leisure club (with indoor swimming pool) and 24-hour room service. Children stay and eat for free! As always, the staff, in whatever position, were wonderful. Over the years and the number of visits we have made we have got to know some of them personally and it is really good to see them again. They are the chief reason we keep coming back.

We were here specifically to visit the Historic Dockyard which was excellent, definitely need a full day. The staff were excellent, vert friendly and informative. Rochester is also very interesting to visit, especially the cathedral
average place ,royal artillary place worth a visit but handy for vising other places .Rochester only 7 minutes away by train.Asfar as feeling safe ,about the same as any other place you visit only had short stay so cannot comment on night life.transport good, major shops apart from asda conviniently all together
The town is very historic with buildings to match. If you like public houses go you’ll be in your element. There is a reasonable priced multi storey car park close by near the station The castle and the cathedral are opposite each other but didn’t visit. They look very impressive especially in the evening from the pub Ye Arrow Back garden.
We went particularly to spend a day visiting the Chatham dock yard. It was amazing in size and content. We learned a lot about its history and were fascinated in going on board three historic vessels there. The eating areas were very good and gave good choices even for Vegans! Plenty of parking under cover.
Gillingham is a good centre for visiting Chatham (for the Dockyards), Rochester and Maidstone. The town itself has a few eateries, good supermarkets, a pedestrianised precinct and some shops. Good train links to London and the South-East. Good bus links to the surrounding area. The town itself does not boast many facilities for tourists (eg. museums etc) but is a good base.
Rochester has a castle and cathedral which are worth a visit. Parking is difficult in town but you can usually get a place on the Esplanade. It's not free. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the town with a wide variety of cuisine. We had a lovely Italian meal at Mama Mia's who kindly served us though we were a little late. Also The Cheese Room is a great place to eat but it's essential to book. You'll get a good cask ale at The Cooper's Arms and the locals will actually have a chat with you and give you recommendations for the town. We used our stay to go to Chatham Historic Docks. It is expensive but your ticket lasts for a year. We went on three consecutive days which was why we were visiting the area and still didn't see everything. We're hoping to go back before our tickets expire and explore the rest of the site. The Docks are superb, great for kids and adults alike and the food is very good when compared with other tourist sites. Make sure you see the ropemaking and the secret ship under the floor. Excellent. Parking is free on site. The submarine is fascinating but a bit tricky getting through the bulkheads. Make sure you visit the RNLI collection and this year there is a special exhibition marking 200 years of the founding of the RNLI. Also, take a little walk across the bridge in the centre of Rochester, it's really beautiful and has an interesting history.
