SJPDP is the traditional starting point for el Camino de Santiago's French route. You can feel all the positive energy and excitement from the Peregrinos at portas of their journey.
Although the first stage from SJPDP, crossing the Pyrenees to Spain, is challenging the journey and the satisfaction of completing it is multiple times more rewarding and will remain as a memorable experience!

There is surely more to do and see in Saint Jean-Pied-de-Port than we had time for. The Hotel Ramuntcho was perfect in every way. We were in town only for one night before beginning the Camino, and we would have been delighted to stay longer had time allowed.

We went to St Jean because it is the starting point of the French Camino. It is a charming place, lots of good places to stay and eat - though the prices in a cafe we stopped at are a lot higher than in nearby Spain! 5 Euros for a glass of wine compared with 1.5 Euros in Spain!

It’s beautiful little town in a beautiful setting.

Well, we ate one of the restaurants where we could sit outside. Unfortunately I’ve forgotten the name of the restaurant. The food was good. The restaurant was quite busy. I gave the cashier €50 and was short changed €20. 🤨

Beautiful town at the start of the Camino frances.
Beautiful town at the start of the Camino frances. Not good for dairy and gluten allergy though and not every restaurant and bar proprietor is friendly. Hardly anything provided in any language other than french. Looking forward to crossing into Spain.

My niece and I stayed the night before beginning our Camino Frances. Gite Bidean was easy to find, quite central in the old town. The hosts, Pascal and Joe, were friendly and helpful, the Gite was very clean and well equipped. I loved the privacy curtains around our beds, although they can block air movement on a warm night. There is one room, dorm style, w/ no curtains around beds. Excellent stay!
A lovely old building with lots of polished wood. A good kitchen and Lidls only 100 metres away.
The town is expensive and very popular so you are pay high prices for adequate but basic accommodation. Nonetheless a good choice if staying in St Jean PdP.
Read the rules carefully about checkout times and bedding etc. All clearly laid out.
The bunk beds were nice and sturdy. I’ve been on the top bunk in several albergues since then, and these were the best so far. The breakfast included is more substantial than what many other alburgues offer. The host loves to tease guests so don’t take him seriously if he says you can’t have something because you didn’t ask in French. :)
Great Albuergue for the beginning of the Camino. The owner was friendly and accomodating, and wished that we take our own "Camino" without feeling like he we have to keep up with others.
This was my first night in an Albergue, so I recommend a sleeping bag, facemask and earplugs for anyone who is unfamiliar.
Everything. Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is not really the kind of place where we would extend our stay. However, Marc is an exceptional host and the property is truly lovely. Our room, the use of a kitchen, the wonderful terrace at the rear kept us there for many days more than we had intended.
Nice place to stay. Clean room with a mini-kitchen, stocked with enough utensils to be useful. Decent bathroom, air-conditioning, and great location between the train station and the Main Street in town. Nice place to stay before beginning the Camino. Lots of nearby restaurants.
Excellent shout for first night of the Camino and shared sleeping. Great quality Albergue. Amazing hosts and volunteers . Gorgeous welcome and pilgrim dinner . So warm and hospitable . Farewell breakfast and reflection before departure
Amazing experience. The hotel has beautiful grounds and mountain views. Breakfast was exceptional - homemade yogurt, homemade preserves, meat, eggs, cheese, fresh pastries and more. Owners were extremely welcoming and helpful.
Very nice location, quiet and near the top of the citadel. Hospitalero Ax was very helpful. Early morning meditation with Ax and other pilgrims set us on the right path to the Camino Frances.
Nice small hotel in the heart of the historic village. Beautiful, storybook views from the hotel room windows and spacious rooms overall. Friendly hosts and quiet surroundings.
Amazing location I side the old city walls. Accommodation was finished to a very high standard and very comfortable. A beautiful hotel and a great stay. Highly recommended!
Pancho was an exceptional host. He takes care of everything and it is immaculate!! Great way to start the Camino Frances. We’ll stay here again if we get the chance.
