One of the best experiences of my life. Thank you for a relaxing evening!

The lodge manager is a super chill dude, despite arriving very late, he managed to cook me up a nice dinner. The lodge can be reachable via Joetsu JR if you get off at 土合駅 Doai station, and if would more than ideal if you can drive. Be wary of that the doai station has a long underground tunnel that would take you 8 minutes even if run down stairs.

Amazing picturesque location! Mineral water was natural and wonderful. Be prepared to sleep on a futon on the floor, but other than that very comfortable. People are very nice anyways in Japan, but the staff here was particularly helpful and accommodating. Free shuttle bus from Jomo-Kogen was a real plus which enabled us to get there from Tokyo via Shinkansen. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Great place for skiing.
Great place for skiing.
We tried Houdaigi Ski area and Minakami kogen200 ski resort. Both were excellent.
Houdaigi is just a ski area with a restaurant and gift shops. The ski slopes are good.
Minakami kogen200 is a hotel with attached ski area, which makes it a ski resort I guess.
It's hard to find vegetarian or vegan food in these areas though.

Very old town, many of the restaurants and shops were closed - probably because of COVID-19.
The nature is truly beautiful there, huge mountains, lots of natural water and flowers.
There are also many hiking trails that can be a bit tricky to find but it's definitely worth it to do some research about the area.

Self driving is a proper way to Minakami, especially during driving to the onsen. Both sides of the road, you can view the forest and trees covered with whitish snow and natural stream and dams in it. No need to hurry when you drive and you can take a photograph anytime during the journey.

An onsen town at the base of the Japan Alps.
An onsen town at the base of the Japan Alps. A slow town that's a little run down thanks to overdevelopment during the bubble era. However, it feels like its making a comeback, with a thriving adventure activity scene and community, as well as cheap, good quality accommodation. There's even a craft beer bar and a good quality pizza joint.
Access is very good, with a bullet train station nearby and frequent buses offering access to nearby nature and activities.
Give it a few years and a bit of love and it will be a thriving destination.
Fantastic location with great views of the mountains, and the onsens are superb. The super hydrogen onsen is no gimmick either, it made me feel so much more relaxed than a regular onsen. Not to mention the onsen has a great view of the mountain as well, making for a very relaxing experience.
Rooms are very comfy and the food was delicious. Easy to arrange the shuttle pickup from the station as well.
The hotel is a mix of Japanese with European influence, so they'd have coffee in the lounge and lavender pouches on your pillows. Plus the French-Japanese fusion dinner was of high quality with loads of seafood and quite literally adorned with gold flakes! Breakfast was Osechi - New Year's food cos we arrived on the 3rd January but it was equally good!
The atmosphere was unlike anywhere I have been before, the mountains, room, hotel decor and the river at the bottom were exceptional.
The staff were very helpful and the half board dinner and breakfast were superb.
The private outdoor bath on the balcony is a wonderful place to just sit and take in your surroundings.
Beautiful, scenic, and historic onsen ryokan hotel nestled in the mountains. The ryokan retains an authentic and genuine atmosphere. Meals are lovely too, and prepared with care and attention to detail. There are beautiful hikes around the property too, and the three onsen facilities are absolutely stunning!
The traditional Japanese-style room looking at the public pools and the public onsen were both incredible. We we're unlucky in the fact that there was a big snow storm that forced us to check out early, but in our time there we used most of the public pools and it was fun and relaxing even as the snow fell!
Wonderful staff with an attention to customer service. The room exceeded our expectations and the private onsen in the room was lovely. If you want a quiet and relaxing onsen getaway where your needs are taken care of for a night or two, this is a great spot. Food was good and felt locally inspired.
Breakfast and dinner were large and tasty, the onsens spectacular, staff kind and helpful, and rooms very comfortable and clean. Micasa is also very close to Tenjin skiing (a few minutes drive up the road) and located in a cute town with good restaurants (and even pretty good local beer).
The host and his wife are very accomodating and helpful with any request.
The room is clean and spacious and the coffee is great!
I recommend this place wholeheartedly!
There is also an onsen nearby and a ski resort.
come here 2nd time in 3 months from Thailand, the food, the onsen were great. staffs are very welcome and attentive. pick up - dropped off from Minakami station.
