At the centre of the Mayan Riveria is Playa del Carmen, a playground for hip Europeans and toned-and-tanned Americans. This resort town showcases the renowned white-sand beaches of the Caribbean Coast along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen's powdery white sands are nestled between Cancun to its north, Tulum in the south and the island of Cozumel, 20 km east with its fantastic diving in the nearby Great Maya Reef. Awake from an afternoon nap to take a dip, go snorkelling or deep-sea fishing in the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Playa is an easy choice as a holiday destination with its range of hotels, many first-class restaurants and beachside nightclubs. Quinta Avienda, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist hub and shopping district. For a more authentic Mexico experience, venture outside of the centre to a local cenote (sinkhole) or Mayan ruins in Tulum.
Cruise ships dock in nearby Cozumel and traffic people to the mainland arriving at the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. If the glimmering Caribbean waters are full, then Booking.com has a huge number of hotels with an outdoor swimming pool by the beach.

It was an unexpected delight.
It was an unexpected delight. It's a walkable city close to the beach. It comes alive at night and is so serene to navigate through. The structure of the buildings are gorgeous. I loved also being around the people of Playa Del Carmen; I loved the local feel to it.

Having spent some time in Cancun, (zona hotelera) before visiting playa del Carmen, I think I would definitely prefer the beaches in Cancun. Playa del Carmen had a lot of seaweed and I found that unpleasant. The sea was alright, the facilities we didn't use because our accommodation was right in front of the beach.

Playa del Carmen has great weather and great food, but it is...
Playa del Carmen has great weather and great food, but it is crazy expensive. It's been a few years since my last trip to Mexico, but beers for 20-30 Pesos are long gone. Now it is more like 65-95. A bad margarita was 110 pesos and a good one was 190 or more. Feeding my family of 3 cost well over $100/day, and that's eating only 2 meals. A two tank dive for a certified diver was $145. A one hour snorkeling tour for 3 was $210. Also, it's full of hawkers and vendors and scams (the tip is often added to your bill at a restaurant and they try to hide that from you). Playa del Carmen had none of feel that Zijhuataneo did in 10 years ago. It's not a community. It's a place to go for tourists (from Mexico, the US, and Europe) to enjoy the beach and weather and for Mexicans to go to extract money from tourists.

I love the ambiance of the hotel itself. The staff was amazing! Specially Celine and tatiana at the reception. They were both very friendly and accommodating. They made sure our stay was smooth. They also offer pastries which is really good for breakfast. Other than that the lady who cleans our room is also amazing. I didn’t get to ask her name but her hairstyle give it all with her curls on the side of her ears hehe . If i was to go back in playa del carmen i would book it at Balkón boutique again. Thank you!
Fantastic hotel, located on 5th Avenue, 10 minutes walk from the beach. Close to many bars and restaurants.
The room is very big and clean, the bed is very comfortable, Wifi connection is very good.
The staff is very communicative and helped me a lot during my stay, they were very caring and made sure I was as comfortable as possible during my stay.
I loved this place !!! I will come back for sure when I am back to Playa Del Carmen.
spacious hotel that caters for every need Someone can ask for; Asiana restaurant was one the best dinners during our whole Mexico trip - 100% recommend this restaurant; beach are is wonderfully maintained - almost no seaweed on the beach or floating around in the water; room is spacious & comes with a private jacuzzi; entertainment program in the main pool area during the day & a quiet side pool away from the action
Overall good stay, facilities are new and very clean. Pretty sure it's the best value for money in Playa. We had a room on the 5th floor so we had almost a private sun deck, which was amazing since our toddler could play around there.
Great location, bit further away from all the tourist buzz. Nice restaurant below (not belonging to hotel). Clean and new. Just comfortable, not luxury.
The hotel itself was amazing. It has a great location right on the beach, some great pools in the resort and the town of playa del carmen is right on the doorstep if you want to head out in the evening or go shopping in the day. The staff were all very friendly and the entertainment during the day by the pool was great.
This will definitely be my hotel of choice now in Playa del Carmen. The staff are so welcoming and the rooms have huge comfortable beds and constant hot water in the shower. There are 2 small pools if you want to relax away from the beach. Both ADO bus terminals are close by as is the beach and a range of places to eat.
Sunset Fishermen is a relatively small friendly property right on the beach in the Playacar section of Playa Del Carmen. Nice pool with swim up bar and great outdoor casual daytime restaurant. Beautiful beach with easy ocean entry and smooth sand bottom. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Plenty of free parking.
This hotel is perfect for visiting Playa del Carmen. The location is very good, in the old town, close to the beach and to bus station. The rooms are spacious and clean, I loved the bathroom. Nice design throughout the building with communal areas where you can relax in the garden.
Its located in the best and safest part of Playa del Carmen, but has no direct access to the beach. You need to take a shuttle (i think it's provided by hotel for free) or a walk (which is really a great option, because of lovely neighborhood).
Comfortable hotel, not too far from the main tourist attractions but on a quiet street and right on the beach. Food at Lido was exceptional, probably the best we experienced in our Cozumel/Playa del Carmen visit.
An amazing resort located right in the middle of one of the best beaches in the world. An excellent all inclusive hotel with a wide variety of cuisines and well thought out locations of alcohol and snack bars.
Clean, well-manicured grounds. Right on the beach in the heart of Playa Del Carmen, so you can get a sense of the city and retreat to the private resort. Great location. Staff were really nice. Food was good!
Everyone at the Illusion hotel went out of their way to make are stay one of the best visits in Playa Del Carmen. This was our second time staying at Illusions and will definitely be back.
The facilities were very clean. The attention was excellent and the hotel is in one of the best locations in Playa del Carmen. We stayed there again a week later. I highly recommended it.
Of all the places that we stayed during our Cancun, Tulum, playa del Carmen adventure, Casa Leo was hands down the best. The pictures do not do it justice at all.
Very peaceful, quiet and cozy, which is highly appreciable at Playa del Carmen. Hotel staff is super welcoming and helpful. Rooms are well decorated and clean.
