This was a very clean and comfortable hotel, right on the ski slopes. We sent our skiis to and from Narita airport via the affordable luggage delivery. Room was huge and clean, onsen was nice, staff was very helpful and friendly. Discount ski lift tickets are available at the front desk.

I would absolutely recommend this property to anyone! It is a little out of the way (1 hr bus ride from Yamagata station) but it’s well worth it. Two separate baths with two separate origin waters and a private bath you can book by the hour, and an outdoor bathtub in your room was really cool. It includes a very traditional dinner and breakfast using local specialties. Local sake selection for dinner/room service was also excellent. The staff was so polite and nice - they even carried our luggage to our room and picked us up at the bus station! Room was nice and big with seasonal nature sounds.
Just a 1-minute walk to Nakamori Ski Resort, Le Vert Zao offers both Japanese and Western-style rooms.Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas and free private parking is provided.

the hotel is a bit far from bus terminal but no problem because hotel provide free shuttle van from hotel to many ropeway and also shuttle van from Yamagata st. to hotel (round trip).

Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains. Mostly tailored to skiers and snowboarders though, with the many hills and ski facilities. But it's also a lovely place for a brief visit if you want some relaxation and onsens. We visited mainly for seeing the Zao Snow monsters and relaxing at a nice hotel. Unforuntately the Snow Monsters had already melted when we were there, and only one cablecar worked going up the mountain, so there was a huge line.
The town is cozy with a few restaurant options. We did not ski and stayed for two nights which was just the right amount of time, as there's not that much to experience in the town, other than ski, visit onsen and take the cablecar (if it's working properly)

It's good for a few days of hitting the slopes and had a surprising number for eateries compared to some of the other onsen towns.
The juhyo (snow monster) is an interesting sight (depending on the weather) especially since you will have to go right to the top of the mountain to see it.
It has a night viewing session depending on the season for the juhyo also.
And if you're driving, Yamagata town is just a short 30mins drive down the mountain and you'll have more eateries to choose from.

I stayed in Zao Onsen in mid October and had a beautiful time absorbed in the energy of the mountains and blown away by the ‘koyo’ autumn leaves 🧡 In the off season, it proves a serene escape to soak in the onsens, and take in the clean air and stunning views on various hikes. I can only imagine how much fun it would be when covered in snow!

I booked for a group of 3 families.
When I checked in they assumed that the Japanese family is the primary contact. The hotel front refused my ID and address and INSISTED that the Japanese family should be the primary contact and address.
This is unacceptable considering that I am the one booking.
It caused a lot of confusion and uncomfortable to my group.
If you do not want foreigner to book the property then why bother listing it in the booking.com?

Interesting for its hot springs one can find almost everywhere and its location in a charming mountain are. The little town itself doesn't offer much and is rather boring. Few restaurants that close early at about 3 pm and hardly any shopping facilities. Fortunately, there is at least a small convenience store. The sulphurous smell of the hot springs can be noticed all around the area.

Staying at the Christmas Rose Hotel was perfect for hot springs ( onsen ) and also close to convenience store. The owners are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Free rides to zao hp town and had coupons for the four main hot springs there. Tatami mat flooring and Japanese type hotel. Perfect for relaxing away from major city type hotels. Peaceful time memories. I have videos on youtube also about it. Highly recommended!! Zao Onsen is an amazing place.
We love the meals, services, big rooms and the strategic location to Zao Sky Cable. It is quite a walk to Sanroku Ropeway but the hotel offers pick up and drop off service whenever you want, which is a total plus. Breakfast and Dinner are just marvelous. The facilities are quite old but it is clean and very traditional Japanese. The Onsen is the best in town and it's open 24 hrs....
Overall, we love it and definitely will go back.
Very nice, traditional experience!
We were very surprised with the diversity of the breakfast. If you want to experience a proper Japanese breakfast, here is one place where you can do that very well.
The onsen was very pleasant too, but you might need to get accustomed to the temperature.
All in all we had a very pleasant stay here and we can definitely recommend!
Thanks a lot :)
The location is beautiful and the staff was incredibly kind, patient and accommodating. They were able to help us set up a private onsen experience, ensured we had everything we needed, and were very helpful. Limited English options for speaking but most things had English translations for guests who are new to Japanese or struggle with Kanji.
Zao onsen is a beautiful town, a great place to go skiing but our stay was memorable thanks to the big kindness of Oraphin and Taka. They are such beautiful people, willing to help you and to make sure you have everything you need. We bring back home wonderful memories and we wish to come back. Thanks again!
Very clean, quiet, modest hotel with very nice acidic sulfurous onsen that is very hot great for end if day skiing in the windy cold slopes. The hotel offers discounted ski lift tickets and is within short walking distance to the Nakamori ski lifts.
Very beautiful traditional ryokan, the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Had a blast snowboarding for the first time and enjoyed the onsen after a whole day out in the cold. Breakfast and dinner are delicious and very large portions.
This is the second time staying in this resort hotel, totally enjoyed the stay! the ski center is just next to hotel. The hotel has a lovely outdoor onsen and the restaurant serves good dinner and breakfast! Lovely hotel. strongly recommended.
Love the ambiance. We loved our room. Normally we make our own futon in Ryokans but here in Meitoya, they make the bed for us. We were late for dinner but the staffs were really nice they even called to remind us. Love the onsen.
We arrived early and they were able to provide us with name checkin and left luggage. We were then able to Ski that day! Bonus! Very easy! Great half board with the Japanese set dinner for one night and and shabu shabu next.
Great location, 5 minutes walking from the ski resort, 1 minute from public onsen, 2 minutes walking from the bus stop.
A lot of restaurants around.
The stuff are friendly.
The breakfast is really good, Japanese style.
The meals were very good.
Staff helpful
Location also good as hotel is between two ski lifts, around 7 minute walk to either.
The onsen was outstanding, sitting outside in the onsen while it's snowing was great.
Lovely hotel, with very large, comfortable rooms. Inside and outside onsens are gorgeous, they even have massage chairs Modern and clean luxury hotel feel. Let down with only a couple of fixable issues
The location and bus access was extremely convenient and one of the primary reasons in choosing the place. The hotel also offers their own shuttle service to get you around faster if your in a pinch.
Spacious Japanese style room with great view.
Friendly staff and service;
Flexible check in process;
A lot of entertainment facilities, although I only used Onsen.
The location was very convenient and located less than five minutes from the bus terminal. The Ryokan was very comfy and the hosts were very hospitable.
