FAQs about hotels in Rotorua

A Volcanic Land of Wonders

Rotorua is living proof of the magnificent, and sometimes mind-boggling, might of nature. Smoking hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fast-spouting geysers give the surrounding landscape an almost other-worldly feel.

This New Zealand city sits in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s newest geothermal hotspot. It was created after the 1886 eruption that covered Te Wairoa Buried Village, between 2 of many lakes gracing this fertile terrain. By Lake Rotorua’s shores is the luxurious Polynesian Spa with its thermal pools. Just behind in Government Gardens are the city’s best cultural offerings: the Arts Village, Tamaki Maori Village and Rotorua Museum, in an elegant former bath house.

Native animals roam in Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park below Mount Ngongotaha, accessible via the Skyline cable car. The views while ascending make it obvious why this is called the Bay of Plenty. Tikitere Thermal Park on the opposite side of the lake is known as Hell’s Gate, but as long as you can ignore the sulphuric smell, the spas are simply heavenly.

More springs are in Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, whose surrounding forest is popular for mountain biking, and Wai-O-Tapu where the Champagne Pool is a striking mix of green and orange.

Booking.com’s accommodation range is as diverse as the scenery, encompassing luxury hotels, cheap hostels and motels near Rotorua Airport.

We had two grandchildren and had to plan a mix of activities to suit their needs. (They were the reason we went to Rotorua - creating memories) Looked at free activities as well as paid. The waterfront has excellent playground facilities for all ages, and they had horse rides as well. Kuirau park has good facilities - heaps of parking and walkways with clean geothermal foot pools. The luge was a great hit with the 7 year old.... They were a tad too low for my husband (70 yr) to use. Went on the DUCK to the x3 different lakes, but it may have been a bit slow a trip for my two little ones who hate travelling anyway. Of course, they really enjoyed going to 'MOTION'.... Heaps of activities that they were able to participate in. Didn't get to see all that we could, but no doubt they will return in future. Town traffic was light even though it was Labour Weekend, so it was easy to get around and find parking. (Hard to find a shop with decent "fish & chips".. The one further along from the motel was closed!!!)

The locality was useful and not too far from the venue I was attending. There is ample access to stores, cafes and eateries within 5-10 minutes of the facility. It's on the lakeside therefore the view is lakeside. lovely warm day and awesome views all round. Very good area to visit for a weekend or just to holiday.

Rotorua is easy to get around, not crazy busy & there is lots to see & do. We were attending the NZCM Entertainer of the Year Awards at the Howard Morrison building. This was fabulous! Had a few meals out & all were yum. Atticus Finch Hennessey Pig n Whistle Ani's (was the highlight) Had a mud bath at Hells Gate - highly recommend.

We lived in Rotorua for almost 30 years.

We lived in Rotorua for almost 30 years. We left a long time ago to retire by the sea. Since then many shops in the main streets have closed and new shopping areas have emerged nearby and along TeNgai road. The central city now looks somewhat depressed . Tourist attractions are expensive by our pensioner standards. The lakes and thermal areas remain outstanding.

With all of the publicity over Fenton Street I was worried that we might be exposed to what we’d seen on TV being close to Fenton St. There was no need for worry, it was lovely and quiet. This shower had the best water pressure that we’ve come across and we’ve stayed at many hotels and motels. Staff were so accommodating they gave us options to rectify a problem and took their time with our problem despite being very busy

Sudima Hotel was perfect and the location was excellent as it was next to the lake and Polynesia spa and not too far from the city center.
