The floor heating in the rooms provides warmth without decreasing humidity. The most comfortable stay I had during my ski trip. The hosts will drop off and pick up guests at the lifts so you can enjoy the Zao mountain. Not much around the location so be sure to eat before returning to the hostel.

Guests can witness Buddhist prayers. This is an authentic temple with prayers every morning by the Buddhist monks. The room was large and spacious. The futons were comfortable and the food amazing

Recreational choices include going skiing, or taking a stroll in the beautiful garden. Free WiFi is provided at the lobby and guest rooms. This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

Only a 1-minute walk from the Zao Onsen Ski resort, Pension Puutaro offers Japanese-style rooms, a French course for dinner and free Wi-Fi. The property is located just a minute's walk from Shinzaemon No Yu, a hot spring bath complex. Free parking is available, and Zao Ropeway is just 1 minute on foot. very nice owner. Close to rope way (excellent location).

Set 24 km from Kamo Aquarium, 大聖坊 Daishobo offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. The air-conditioned accommodation is 46 km from Shinjo Station. Guests can make use of a garden. I felt like family and yet had all the privacy I required. The Master was gracious to include me in the morning prayers. This stay was the best possible addition to my time on Mt Haguro and learning lore about the spirituality of the Yamabushi and the DewaSanzan. The food was incredible, so healthy and much was grown locally. It was the best place I stayed in my two weeks in Japan.

The property is non-smoking and is located 16 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. Cozy house with lots of wonderful places to curl up to read a book or play games with friends. Very family friendly. The host was very responsive to all our needs. There is an amazing supermarket close by so you don't need to cook but there are also good supplies for cooking your own meal. TIP 1: To lock the door, pull the rear panel towards you so the lock can engage. TIP 2: To get the fire going 1. Add pellets in the back compartment 2. Click the black button which is below a white cylinder (it'll compress the cylinder) 3. Light a pelletman firestarter (found in the brown box) and place it in the front area (just behind the glass) 4. Turn on the machine (it will blow air to keep the flame ignored)

Situated in Asahi-machi in the Yamagata Region, 18 km from Yamagata, Daichan Farm Guest House boasts a barbecue and ski-to-door access. The guest house has a terrace and a ski school, and guests can enjoy a meal at the restaurant. Free private parking is available on site. Warm authentic welcome. Food was fantastic and the dining room was a fantastic step back in time.

Only a 5-minute walk from the Pagoda at Mount Haguro, Shukubo Kanbayashi Katsukane offers Japanese-style rooms, vegetarian Japanese meals and free Wi-Fi. Guests can witness a Shinto religious ritual in June and September, which is performed at the property. The whole atmosphere was beyond tranquility. The old house, bringing every association with "Japanese living" to live, the relaxibg sounds of a river and crickets, making the night perfect for just slowly drifting to sleep, and the avsolutely lovely personal, helping and preparing everything with wholehearted frindliness.

Situated in Tsuruoka, 17 km from Kamo Aquarium, Ohanabatake features accommodation with a garden and free private parking.

All units are fitted with a microwave, fridge, a kettle, a shower, a hair dryer and a desk. With a shared bathroom fitted with a bath and slippers, units at the guest house also boast free WiFi. The units will provide guests with kitchenware. Very warm place, the host is a kind gentleman and really care about his guest. The room is big for solo traveller, although no air-conditioner but the room is cool and I can sleep well every night. There are no restaurants or shop nearby, yet I am bycycle traveller and there is a big supermarket 3km nearby only take 15mintues ride :)
